Question Sound Deadener?

What's up guys, I have been thinking bout deadening my car but I am highly skeptical about this, does this stuff really make it sound that much better? If I am going to do it, I will do it right and do the entire car, has anyone else done this? I read the sound deadener showdown, but that is only one opinion, anyone else have any opinions experiences? Thanks for ur time.

It doesn't really make your music sound that much better, but it does eliminate road noise giving that luxury car feel. However, be awareif you want to dynamat your whole car because dynamat is heavy. Dynamat + good speakers + amp = awesome music.

I probably shouldn't reply since it is still just one guy's opinion, but I have done a few more cars since I wrote that and talked to a few hundred people who have done theirs.

Our cars are very noisy so it makes a huge difference there. You'll will also see a big improvement in SQ, especially with speakers in your doors and a sub in the trunk. A full out job will add up to 100 lbs to the car, so that is a consideration.

Here's the best example of success I can give you. A month or so ago my Girlfriend went back to Ireland to visit her family for a week. I decided to deaden her car while she was gone to see if there would be a difference she would notice. She couldn't care less about cars and while she is pasionate about music, she isn't very discerning about sound quality and cares nothing for the hardware involved.

This was a 5 year old Saturn SL1 with everything stock. Another noisy car. At any rate, I didn't go all out, just did a very thorough job on the doors, a bit in the trunk and I pulled out the dash and did from the firewall down to the mounting bolts for the front seats. Put it back together and waited.

On her return, she left the house, and drove to work and home in the evening. When she came in, her first words were: "There is something seriously wrong with my car." I asked what. "I can't hear the motor or the wheels and the radio is much louder."

This pleased me alot since 1) I have been encouraging her to pay attention to changes in her car and 2)once I told her what I had done and that it didn't indicate a problem, she immediately agreed it was a huge improvement.

When you have loud subs, deadening the trunk lid DOES make the sound clearer. You will lose less volume to the trunk lid's oscillations, and your bass will be much tighter.

If you want to deaden the whole car, I suggest you consider the extra few hundred pounds you will be adding with any quality deadener.

i wouldn't go nuts with it. you can easily put 100+ lbs in there and yes it will be quiet but what about all that extra weight is like having another person in your car. i would stick to important areas like the doors where there are actually speakers. then yes it will help sound quality.

Umm, you guys are forgetting one thing. It is a civic, and they are already slow. Regardless, I advocate deadener in every form. It reduced all of the outside distortion that you get form road noise, etc. it deadens the panels so they do not resonate. It also serves a purpose in door speaker applications especially. This purpose is to eliminate or reduce backwave distortion from the speaker. It keeps the front and rear wave from cancelling each other out and you get much cleaner sound from your speakers. I'm cutting it short here, but it is very beneficial in terms of audio quality.

you can get dynXorb pads that are specifically made to reduce backwave distortion. www.carmedia1.com www.b-quiet.com

To get the maximum benefit you want to both seal the door - turning them into an IB enclosure and place something like a deflex pad or just a few layers of closed cell foam directly behind the speaker.

Ok, thanks guys, I think I will definitely do the doors and the trunk cuz I have two tens and my trunk really rattles (I know its the license plate, but I'll fix that too). Also, I just installed a pair of INfinity 6010 Compnents up front and would like to improve their SQ. And whoever said that 100 lbs is a lot must not have a stock civic, cuz my baby is slowwwwww...... 0-60 in bout 5 years. 100 lbs couldn't make it that much slower.

it does affect the car if you're in tune with how it drives. having one person affects handling, braking, acceleration alot. add a third person and you'll really feel it. one thing you can do to the trunk right away is go adjust those rubber stoppers so the trunk seals up better. stock comes really loose.

I used Tempur-Pedic Visco Elastic memory foam from an old bed.. Used about 3 lbs of it for the entire car. i.e. the lining of the glove box, inside the doors, around the rear brake light where we get that annoying rattle on every bump, etc. it has stopped a good 90% of all the rattles.. My car was a rattle bucket, especially after the accident..

If you are adding enough sound deadening to get to 100 lbs, you're using at least 200 square feet and most of it is going to be on the floor of the vehicle, firewall to trunk. Some will be in the doors and other vertical surfaces, but the majority of the added weight will have a very low center of gravity. The negative impact on handling will be minimal and will certainly be much different than adding a person - single point, high center of gravity.

Sure there will be consequences from adding 100 lbs to our cars, but it's really a question of compromise. What's more important? Driving comfort, sound quality or a miniscule reduction in fuel economy. If 0 to 60 is your biggest prority, Civic isn't the car for you anyway.

i say the most noise reduction will come from better tires. i noticed night and day difference between crapstones and the turanzas i have now.

Hey, I heard that the Yokohama Avs DB 2 tires are supposed to be really quiet, hence the name "DB 2". Anyone have any of these, anyone have any other tires that may be quiet? Oh, and what size/type turanzas did u get gearbox?

Oh, and has ne one used the sound deadener off of Ebay? is this stuff any count? It is like $130 including shipping for 100 square feet, doesn't seem too bad to me.

Oh, and what about the spray on sound deadener, anyone had any luck with this?

Depends which one on eBay you are talking about - there are many. Most are asphalt like FatMat, R-Blox, Thermodamp, etc. Be very careful.

There are some very good liquid vibration dampers, but I'm really only familiar with those made by Second Skin and Cascade. Generally, I'd be skeptical of anything packaged in an aerosol can. It looks like to be as effective as the mats, the liquids need to be applied at the same thickness which generally means many coats that will weigh as much as the mats. You have to be prepared to spend hours building up layers and letting them dry. Very good for some applications, pretty tough to get done for others.
