'05 Civic EX, 25000+ Miles, Doesn't start as easy
Hey guys,
I haven't quite taken it to a mechanic yet, money issues. But I'm trying to determine what issues I may be having. I have a 2005 Honda Civic EX. It has like 25300 miles on it, and I've had it for just shy of a year. I've already had the oil changed, and the oil was checked the other day without issues. I know I'm due for one because I've exceeded the mileage due for my next one, so I have one coming up.
One of the issues I've been noticing is that it seems to idle a bit rougher than normal. It idles around 1200rpm for a few minutes when it's on, and then down to 800 after awhile if I let it sit. Another issue is that it doesn't start right up anymore. I have to hold the key for 1-2 seconds longer than I used to in the morning when first turning it on. What would cause this?
Just aiming for some ideas, I know I have to take it to my mechanic, but I like to know what it MIGHT be in advanced.
Thanks!

After you start your car, the civic is suppose to rev up higher to warm the engine up. Regular idling around 800rpm is fine.
Yes starting in the moring could be harder for various reasons, the battery output could be lower cuz of the low temp, its just colder so its harder to start, and possibly that the there is not ready supply of fuel yet.
another reason your car could be hard to start is that it could be low on fuel. I was low once and it took 6 turns to start the engine.

my 05 seems to be having the same problems when starting. Mainly in the morning. Ironically my gas tank was full this morning and it struggled to start for a 1-5 seconds. Also i live in New Orleans and the lowest temperature at night is about 80 degrees.
So new spark plugs? Any other suggestions....

It might be something to do with the fuel pressure mah jigger. Mine does does the same thing at times and i drive an 05 with barely 15k. There was a thread talking about it, you can search and hopefully find it. I'm going to the factory to get it checked out and replaced.

get ngk v-power copper plugs and just change em every 5k miles.
take off the throttle body and completely clean it with carb spray (even the IAC valve which will solve the rough idle), and do the idle learn procedure.
get www.lubecontrol.com products
change air filter.
get a new battery, even if its a cheap $50 one.
upgrade your factory ground wires.
i have 50k miles and my car starts BETTER than when it was new off the lot.

Yeah i have an 05 VP and it has trouble starting sometimes doesnt matter if its in the morning or at night cold or hot out. I took it to the dealership because its still under warrenty. But they could not reporduce the problem so they didnt do anything about it and it still does it so i guess im just living with it. They said it might be something with the computer and key not communitcation propuerly(sp).
Same Here
i had the exact same problem on my 04, take it to the dealer ask them to check the ignition timeing and service yur battery if needed, only cost me $125 and included the reg oil change with lube, Dont ask me what they did
but it fixed the problem

you got raped if you paid $125 to have your battery serviced, check timing and oil change.
First your battery should be maintenence free. And if you feel there is an issue, autozone can check it for free. And the ignition timing isnt adjustable on all newer civics. If the ignition timing is not correct, then you would have to replace the ECU as that is what controls ignition timing. on the civic its nothing more then looking at the timing mark on the crank pulley. if it isnt 8 degrees +/- 2 degrees BTDC at idle, then either cam timing is incorrect or a faulty ECM. And an oil change isnt more then $29. Most places do it for $15-$20.

when in doubt go to the dealer, they will charge you a pretty penny thats for sure, but theyre only goin to screw you once...when they give you the bill
. . . . . . but seriously saves you the headache, i realy dont care if they did do anything to my car but im not complaining anymore
