I am planning to replace the motor mounts myself on my 2002 Civic Si. Except the one by the transmission, which is already replaced by my mechanic. That leaves 3 of them: the 2 on the sides, and the one in the middle, by the radiator.
Question: when I replace the mounts (one by one), do I need to sustain the engine somehow? Will the engine stay in place by itself while replacing each mount? I am asking because I was told that in older cars (Hondas and non-Hondas) you had to support the engine when replacing each mount, otherwise it moves out of place (sort of "fall down") and the other mounts will get broken. One friend told me I should support the engine from underneath the car with a hydraulic lift. Any suggestions from others who replaced the mounts themselves?

I think it has to be supported some how, if not you run the chance of screwing up the rest of the mounts.

well thats nice to know cause i'm almost positive i read in a thread a while back you can do one at a time with out a engine hoist of any sort

I read the same thing in an earlier post on this website, that you can change them one by one, with no mentioning of any support for the engine. Then, a friend told me that his older Golf needed engin support when replacing the mounts. That's exactly why I asked.

I'll suport it with a hydraulic lift underneath, just in case (put a piece of wood between the lift and the engine, otherwise it's metal on metal...).

just put a jack under the engine and trans to support the wieght while the mount being replaced is out. No big deal. you could try to do it without but I don't see the point.

Just put the jack under there for a little bit of support.
