IDLING AT 6000RPM!!! HEEEEELLP
Well heres my story! MY CAR IS SHOT!!!!!!!! I was driving last nite from my house to go see a movie with my friend. When I got about halfway there I noticed that my car was idling a little high. Nothing to much...just about 1000rpm. So I didnt think anything of it. Then about a mile or two down the road my rpm's went up to like 5000!!! And they would not go down. I pulled over at the mall to let my car cool down for a little bit and figured I would start it back up and see if it was any better. NOPE!!! I had not other option than to drive to my boyfriends house (almost redlining everytime I had to stop and put it in neutral.) The further I went...the higher they stuck at. I could keep the rpms down when I stopped if i had it in gear, my foot on the break, and the clutch about halfway out like I was riding the clutch but I would have burnt the hell out of my clutch if I kept doing that. I did it once and could smell clutch baaaad! Its like the accelerator is stuck cause once I got going I had to steady ride the break or my car would have just took off. Basically I was driving without using the gas AT ALL! So to make a long story short...I cant crive my car so Im waiting (have been waiting for 4 hours) for honda to come pick this thing up and get it to the shop. Does anyone know what the prob may be??? Would it have anything to do with any of my engine mods?? Cause I dont want honda to try to blame it on something I have done. All I have done motor wise is CAI, Header, Underdrive Pulleys and Catbacks. Someone please let me know if these things could have caused this prob cause I dont want honda to try and pull anything with me because I am a female!!!! I need to be schooled FAST!!!! PLEASE HELP!!! I mean I know the function of these parts but dont know all the little things....I dont think these mods could have caused this though. But maybe Im wrong. I swear....Im fixing to just take all my stuff off the car and go blow it SKY HIGH!!!!!
My initial problem with the car was that it was idling to low (100rpm)!!! Imagine that!!
But thanks in advance for any help that you can provide!!!

here's a crazy prob that i had when my car was 2000 miles old but I have an auto so i dont know...
I was driving home from work just like normal and I come up to a big intersection and the light is green so i go on through it... I'm making a left turn and going under the overpass when I hear my engine rev really high!
I'm like WTF and i let off the gas and the car is still rolling. I'm going about 35-40 here and I press on the gas again just barely and the rpms shoot way the heck up and the engine sounds very reved...
I let off the gas some more and the car is slowing down... i'm now going about 15 on the rd... (people are backing up behind me). I press the gas and it seems to be working up until ti is suppose to switch to 2nd and it doesn't.
It's like my car is stuck in 1st gear... i pull over to the side and turn off the car and turn it back on again. (being a Computer Science person that's the first thing i try for everything)
my car was working finr in 1st gear it jsut wouldnt go to 2nd... and reverse worked great also... well I was about 4-5 long blocks from my house so I decided to go for it in 1st.
about 30 min later i got home and called Honda. why came and picked the car up on the wrecker and i got a rental car for a couple of days (allof which Honda paid for). Then after 2.5 days they called me back and said that they have no idea what caused the problem. they "reset the codes" (dont' know what all that involves) and it worked. they tested it and everything and couldn't get it to happen again. They went ahead and swap[ped out the recall stuff like the fuel valve or hose or something and then called me to come up the car. I took the car back and it hasn't given me a lick of problems since.
dunno if that helps but I'd have the dealership look at it.

my 88 dodge omni did something similar to that sometimes, the idle would go up to 2500 for a while (normal idle was 900). eventually it would go back to normal, or i could usually make it go back to normal by revving in neutral. my guess is sometimes the pedal got stuck a little or whatever opens to let the gas into the engine got stuck a little. i just lived with it because it didnt happen too often, but yours sounds a lot more serious
it could have something to do with your cai, i remember there was some recall on some of them where a part could break off and get stuck in the throttle body and cause the idle to go way up like that

OMIGOD!!! I hope that isnt the problem...then honda will make me pay for the tow and all this crap! Im fixing to research this whole lemon law thing....this is the second time Ive been in for an idle problem. Isnt it if you go n 3 time for the same thing you can get them for a lemon???
I feel for you girl! It happen to me once my Idling reaches 4000 rpm while stuck on the traffic. My exhaust was so loud so they thinks Im a showoff. It sucks when it happen I try to play with my pedal for strange reason it went back to 1000 rpm. Well it never happen again I wonder what causes it. Well last 2 weeks. I have no Idling speed bring it to shop fix my air control valve. Ask my technician what causes the RPM to reaches 4000 he doesn't belive me that happen at all. he said stop adjusting the throttle cable I don't know but I think civic has a very serious problem with throttle body.

Well to add to my list of B.S..............Honda is making me pay for it all. $132 + tax. $72 to tighten the idle control screw that they swear someone messed with (nobody has ever touched it) $45 for the tow. I dont know what the other $15 is for. They probably charged me for the fact that it took them to long to come up with such a dumb excuse. Anyways....they said that there is no way possible that screw could have came loose.
So I asked him..."If someone DID mess with this screw, would I be able to tell a difference as soon as I started up the car?"
...and he said "Yes, most definately!"
(i am setting him up here)
...so I said "Then explain to me why my RPM's shot up tp 6k all of the sudden after I had been driving my car for about 30 mins"
....then he said "Well It could have rattled loose as you were driving"
and I said..."I thought there was no way possible for this screw to come loose?"
He was like "well it cant just come loose...something had to have caused it"
And I guess since SOMETHING had to cause this problem that automatically means that it was ME! So I am screwed now! I mean dont you think that if I DID mess with it that I would NOT take it to honda cause it wouldnt be covered if I messed with it. Right??? I mean am I just dumb or what?? I want to fight this further with them but Im afraid of them just going ahead and voiding my whole warranty on the peice of junk.. Dont get me wrong...I love my car to death, its my baby...where ALL of my money goes, but sometimes I wish I would have gotten that charcoal color RSX-S that I was going to test drive if it werent for the fact that the bottom fell out of the sky and it started to rain like hell right as the salesman was going to get the keys.
Well I think I have a good majority of my frustration let out now. Sorry to keep you guys reading for so long but I had to get it all out.
Hope you guys have better luck than me with your civics!

You arent the only one to have issues with your dealer. I have too, and probably many here have too. The service manager threated to never service my car there again, if i keep up my "attitude" I told him I bought the damn car, not you, and you are supposed to service it. It was the third time for the drivers seat ratttle, and they took apart my center console and busted the clips. I asked what kind of people he has working here that put in broken clips. The only reason I will go up there now is only for warrenty work, I will do all my oil changes, and other stuff. Call Honda and complain. They dont like complaints, and actaully follow up on them. Good luck.

that problem sounded really bad...i had a problem after i got my car back from the autobody after my lil accident...seems that the autobody...which is a nice place an all...installed the rad hose incorrectly...so not only did the rpm fluctuate up and down, the temp is went all the way up...engine light came on and the hose exploded out of its position...and the car stinks like crazy burning coolant...but my dealer fixed everything in a matter of few hours with no fuss or muss....
in the end it all depends on the dealer to see if the customers were really satisfied...the cars they provide are excellent...its the service that gives everyone a headache...

dont give them any money, tell them to either send it to another dealer for a second opinion or call american honda.. but DO NOT pay them until its worked out. they are just trying to steal your money if you really never touched it. they have to PROVE a mod caused a problem, and they sure didnt PROVE you did anything by saying "something must have caused it"

thanks you guys for all the help. I had to pay it cause I need my car for work. Kinda had no choice. But I am definately going to call Am. Honda or whoever is highest up in the chain and see what can be done. I should not have had to pay $140.71 for them to tighten the screw back tight that controls the idle. But thanks again for all your help!

I'd call them back and ask for the $$ back... say you'll call american honda if they say it's not covered under warranty. Or get a lawyer to type it out on his letterhead and see how fast you get an apology and a refund
