its a corolla SR5 and the USDM SR5's are also AE86's...alll of the USDM 84-87 corolla sport coupe or hatchback are AE86 chassis'...i know i used to own one
the Trueno GT-Apex is basically the same car but it has different front/rear bumpers, taillights, and a slightly different engine from the USDM Corolla GT-S Twincam 16...and the trueno is RHD...the AE86 Levin is the same car but with different headlights, hood, fenders, and bumper which style was never released in the US
in the US market the 84-85 have different bumpers and taillights for both coupe and hatchback fromt he 86-87
ALL US models are AE86 the Hachiroku...only select GT-S's came with LSD's too but all GT-S's came with a dual overhead cam 1.6l engine and rear disc brakes (basically the SI of corollas) the SR5 came with a SOHC, carbureted engine with rear drums, no LSD and a crappy suspension, and no lip on the front bumpers

No, not really. You see in the US, the AE86 came in trims called the SR5 and GTS. The GTS was basically the trim level which included the 4A-GEU DOHC engines in both versions of the Corolla. In the AE86, the driveline from transmission to the rear diff was different and included a lower final gear 4.3 in the 5 speed tranny. The SR5 was 4.1, as well as the few AT equipped GTS. The GTS package also included rear disc brakes, higher grade interior trim, and body color front bumpers. Things an SR5 didnt. Cosmetically the GTS also had bigger side moldings, Twin Cam 16 decal, and rear spoiler. SR5 versions had drum brakes and black bumpers as door moldings.
Now, historically speaking, I do understand that all US market Corollas were considered AE86's, they still had the standard AE85 rear axles and drum brakes as well as interior trim. Plus, instead of the massively JDM 4A-GEU, it came with a 4A-GEC which was a specific USA California Emissions Certified versions. And anything california emissions certified means not as good as the original.

hachi roku means eight six in japanese...the chassis code is AE86 if you look at the VIN # on all of them here...the SR5 has the SOHC 4A-C which is carbureted...the rear end is from an 85 but the chassis is still 86...and its not "hatchi" its hachi which is japanese for the # 8...
the GT-S' got different seats which were similar to the ones in the JDM trueno gt-apex etc...in japan the hachi go which is the 85 has a different chassis which is not as rigid, and a 3a-c engine which is basically a fuel injected version of the 4a-c
the 4A-G base engine can be found in 84-87 corolla gt-s', MKI MR2's and some with superchargers, 89-92 corolla gt-s' which have the american "red top"
but for the transmission issue u are correct chase...also the SR5 tranny can be used on the 4A-G engine
