the manual gearboxes are mechanically more simple. In autos (in addition to being more complex) you also need the computer to control shift points, etc.
It's also assumed that people buying auto Civics aren't necessarily looking for performance, in which case a 5th gear isn't needed.

I'm assuming that having the extra gear would make it easier to stay in the right part of the powerband, when you're doing all the shifting yourself. In an auto the computer can shift more quickly, with no effort on the part of the driver. But that's just speculation.

that would make sense too. I guess it comes down to balancing manufacturing costs vs other costs such as fuel economy, performance etc.

Well, I have just decided that I need power, and manuals seem real cool. I want to be able to turbo it and all that stuff. My my auto just isn't doing it for me, hopefully when I go looking tomorrow I find my Si.

Like they mentioned, autos are far more complex than manual tranny's. Getting more gears from an auto is harder thang getting more from a manual.
Now, what I'm wondering is, if 3rd gear is on a one-one ratio, and fourth is overdrive (the engine is spinning slower than the out from the gear), what do they do when manufacturers tack on a 5th, 6th, 7th gear in an auto? just more overdrive?

autos have wider gears to give better mpg. Since the gears are so wide, 4 is enough for a civic. The manuals have a closer gear ratio, giving better acceleration. Closer gear ratio mean you need more gears.

when did auto Civic's start getting better MPG than 5 speed? Maybe I'm getting the wrong implied message. Also, how about when cruising at 80MPH on top gear, which tranmission would offer a lower engine speed, 5 speed LX or 4 speed LX? Registered!!

If autos had the same gearing the mpg would be worse so they make up for it by making them wider.
For me, i have a auto ex and i can hit 80mph by leaving it at 3000rpm. I think the manual ex's are 3500rpm.
i can hit 110mph in third gear.

I know they've been making auto transmissions probably since before they knew what computers were, but that doesn't change the fact that they're currently more expensive to manufacture.
Also, good luck finding a modern car with a slushbox that's NOT computer-controlled.
