Installing Subwoofer/Amp on HU with Line Out for Left/Right only
Installing Subwoofer/Amp on HU with Line Out for Left/Right only
Okay. At the moment I have a factory 02 HU with no Line Out. I also have a Sirius Starmate installed. I picked up a subwoofer and amp combo and have it wired to the line-out/Headphone jack of the Starmate, and the Starmate is transmitting through the Antenna coupler to access the speakers.
It all works great and the Starmate is acting as an independent subwoofer volume control.
I just aquired a JVC-SX940 head unit for free which I would like to install (it will give me CD capability which I currently do not have, as well as a line-in for an MP3 Player)
The PROBLEM is that if I leave things the way they are I will only have subwoofer when using the satellite Radio. I'd LIKE to hook up the subwoofers to the line out on the new HU, but there is only a Line-Out for the front and rear speakers, and it's my understanding that if I plug the sub into the rear line-out I will not be able to use the harness to connect directly to the rear speakers.
What is the prefered way of hooking all this up?
Any suggestions that do not involve major purchases? The amp has Line outs as well...can I use them to power the rear speakers with another amp?
It's the el-cheapo 1000 watt Visontek combo (1000 watt amp, 2x 12 inch subs in an enclosure) sold at Pep Boys, but it works like a champ for $129 bucks.

you can get a line out converter for 20$ but it's gonna take away from your rear set of speakers. I used one, but I've got a 4-channel amp for the mids and another 2-channel amp for the sub
you dont have a 4ch amp so dont worry about it. just plug the rca in to the rear out pre out. if you are concerned about using the wrong pre out then you should go buy a deck with 3 preouts and i-bus, ai-net, whatever input and get the bus/net cable to rca in adapter. but for right now all your speakers besides the subs are running off the hu internal amp so who cares if you use a pre out that wouldnt be used otherwise.

look man if you really want decent sound get an aftermarket head unit. ebay or something, you can get one for around 60-80 bucks with rca's for the subs and leads for the speakers. besides a a/m head unit would look better anyway. if you can spend 129 for some subs and an amp you can spend 80 more for a nice head unit. if you decide to do this it will solve all your probs

All is well. Hooked the sub-amp up to the line out for the rear speakers and left the speakers hooked up to the HU Harness. It works fine. The system sounds a ton better.
Now I'm on the slippery slope of spending. I'll be getting better speakers soon, and probably another HU with independent line outs for te subwoofer. I'm assuming this will give me independent control of the subs, which are now tied to the base setting on the rear. Have to balance base and fade to get the sound I want, but it works well for the moment.
Funny how the directions for the HU specifically tell you not to use the speaker wires if you use the line out, and it basically works fine. I was concerned it would "stress" the HU but I guess not.
