want light weight wheels?

auto velocity rims... 8 lbs for an 18x10.5 (carbon fibre rim/magnesium centre)
The rims are pricey. The smallest rim that they make is a 17x7.5.
They say their rim is twice as strong as the vette z06 wheel

starts of at $1300 a wheel and moves up to the $20K's depending on what finish of cf and rim you want.

ok, so if you get 4 of these, you save a total of 4 lbs / wheel, thats 32 lbs on the whole car. You can do better than this by not filling up your gas tank and running on 1/4 a tank. If you need these rims because of weight, i think you should just throw your spare tire and jack in the garage and be done with it, or just rip your trunk carpet out, etc. there are other ways to gain this weight difference. But, if you want these rims cause they're cool, then, that's another story. They are cool looking imho.

If Ferrari didnt put them on the Enzo, There must be something wrong with them. In other words I dont trust them.... Super cars allways test the new safe way to loose weight on a vech

While I agree that the price is crazy for what is offered, you need to read up on the difference between sprung and unsprung weight.

one word...pothole. maybe there good for the track, but definitely not for street. and like whitecastle said...if companies like ferrari arent using these, not even in their f1 race cars and such, then i wouldnt trust this "revolutionary" technology. JMO

Yes I did spout off pretty quick, and like you noticed i am not a car racing expert. With that said, I would think that a car would be safer with more of its weight unsprung, and below the carriage, kinda like the keel of a sailboat.

Do you have a good article i can read on sprung/unsprung weight?

keep on keeping-on....

If I had that kind of jack to spend on modding my Civic I think I'd buy a set of 17" Volks/Racing Harts/whatevers and spend the difference on a turbo or engine swap. JMHO.

"Sprung" weight is a term used to describe the parts of an automobile that are supported by the front and rear springs. They suspend the vehicle's frame, body, engine, and the power train above the wheels. These are quite heavy assemblies.

The "unsprung" weight includes wheels and tires, brake assemblies, the rear axle assembly, and other structural members not supported by the springs.

Perfromance wise, its best to have a little unsprung weight as possible, as it allows the suspension to act/react as quickly as possible to road surface iregualritys, and thus keeping the tire more consitantly in contact with the ground. Then theres aslo the issue of Rotational Inertia.
