yeh the 07 camry is a total redesign, while the one spy shot of accord we just saw are MMC (mid model change) so inorder to compete with the redesign of the camry, we have to wait for the 08 accord model.
technically, the new gen camry goes out a year before the new gen accord does. just like this gen. the new camry came out 02 while the new accord came out 03. good marketing for toyota to step ahead of the game.

Honda is good at waiting. Patience is the key. They can see what Toyota has up their sleeve before Honda brings out what it has...
It looks really sharp, which is great for a Toyota.

there's are pros and cons of having to sell a car early/late.
selling new gen early:
pros:
they will get more sales because the consumer wanted to have something "different" against others currently available on the market
cons:
possible of being outvalued by other competitors.
selling new gen late:
pros:
company has the advantage to counter compete, and would know what to bring on the table
cons:
only the hardcore consumers would wait for a specific car remodel(i.e. accord, camry).
consumers would have brought the competitors's model prior to the late release.

If toyota thought lexus and toyota were interchangeable, why would they introduce a lexus lineup in japan?

So to say they are the same this is like saying you and your mother are the same thing. You are came from your mother but you are not the same thing. Parent/sibling companies. If they were the same thing, they would be sold under toyota's name.

The original Lexuses brought into the US were rebadged Toyota's from Japan. American consumers didn't want to pay the extra price tag for a Toyota, so Toyota followed Honda's footsteps and introduced a luxery brand. In Japan, they have had much better success with a single brand because they already offered top end models and low level models under one roof. Lately however, they have been debating on wether or not to bring in a luxery only image to seperate some cars. That is why they will bring Lexus brand to Japan.
I just hope that Camry has the sporty handling to go with that look.

1. Toyota is opening up the "Lexus" name in Japan. Its old news, so just shut up about it. It happened.
2. Its a damn Camry. Its quite possibly the most boring car this side of a Chevy Impala. Who cares. The day it has a little bit of **** and vinegar in it, I'll rethink that, but I've never found any excitement or reason why anyone would buy one of those things. Reliable as hell? Yeah, but so is an Accord, and Accords don't feel like you're driving a minimalist sofa down the highway. Do people really shop at the "Toyotathon"?

Originally Lexus' were just Toyotas with a different badge (Toyota Celsior to the Lexus LS400, Toyota Soarer to the Lexus SC400, Atezza to the IS300). Now since the Lexus brand has become successful Toyota recently decided to make the divisions operate more separately. So now it's not just a marketing ploy.
Furthermore the Toyota Century is not a limo, it's Toyota's top end car. The Nissan President (aka previous gen Q45) was its main competitor. The current Q45 is the Nissan Cima in Japan.
Its based on the toyota crown in japan..
