Insight, I am your father!!!
DCX's Bionicar! bwahhahaa.... damn, this thing looks like a huge Insight... which is probably a good thing since it gets 70 mpg... of diesel.
The Bionic Car is powered by a 2-liter, four-cylinder, common-rail, turbocharged diesel that makes 140 horsepower. Executives said the fuel economy rating of 70 mpg would be about 30 percent higher than that achieved by a production vehicle. Emissions standards would be met in part with a particulate filter and with DaimlerChrysler's "selective catalytic reduction" system -- the injection of urea solution into exhaust.

i think the problem is a lot of them are designed originally for the euopean and asian market and then brought over here if successful. They have a lot of cars over there that look weird by our standards, not just good mileage ones.

The fact that it is a 2.0L engine, diesel, and is turbocharged, means that it is probably a lot quicker then our cars from a stand still and probably has some decent power in the higher revs, but since it is diesel, it won't rev that high (well, compared to a turbo gasoline engine)...
It's a very streamlined car though. I've said that style is similar to the Insight because Honda did its research and found that shape to be extremely effective. Also, like mentioned, diesels are sold more in European/Asian countries where diesel is cheaper and of higher quality and their styles are very very different.
The engine seems nice, but the overall package is a little iffy. If I had to get that look to get that mileage, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole!

My theory on these ugly but really efficient cars is this: No one with ANY taste is going to buy them, so the automakers can say "see, we told you there's no market for super efficient cars" and go back to building cheaper gas guzzlers. Just like OPEC wants them to.

^^ I think he meant Excellent mileage. Those cars get good mileage, but cars designed for excellent mileage are very werid looking. Prius and Insight are great examples for cars in their class.
