Exclamation DIY: Cabin Air Filter Replace

Dust and Pollen Filter Replacement (With Air Conditioning)

The dust and pollen filters should be replaced every 30k miles (48k km) or 24 months whichever comes first. Replace the filters more often if the air flow is less than usual.

1. Open the glove box. Remove the glove box stop on each side, then hang the glove box down.

2. Remove the filter lid from the blower unit, then pull out the first dust pollen filter. Slide the second filter to the left, and pull it out.

3. Remove the filter from the housing, and replace the filter.

4. Install the filters in the reverse order of removal.

the ac smell is caused if you keep it on recirculate mode. It's mildew. Use outside air, or turn the heat on for a few mins before shutting off ac.

I get the funky smell with the heat... and yes I do keep it on recirc. Can I actually get rid of the mildew?

Recirc should be used sparingly, It will make the windows fog if used too long. The system is designed to move air in the front (heat / ac/ defrost /vent) and move it out the rear of the cabin, if you use recirc it does not flow properly. Use with A/C and heater at first and then turn it off.

I thought recirculate keeps recirculating the existing air inside the cabin this helps keep the temperature cooler as it's easier to cool air that has already been cooler vs cooling outside air over again

I think you can use it longer during A/C use.

If I keep it on too long during the winter the windows will quickly fog.

Thats what I thought. Plus its humid like a mother down here, so I thought it was better to recirculate the air.

Post Just replaced my filters today!

Great post man! A pretty easy project for moderate DIY'ers

cause my car's over 4 years old with 40k miles, but this was the first time they've been replaced.

Pollen and crap in the air have been irritating my nose so i gots to thinking I should replace my filters! I went to Autozone to buy cabin air filters, but they only had STP intake air filters so I bought one anyway. Then I went to a NAPA shop and bought their NAPA Gold cabin filters. They all fit well.

Purolator C15439. About $26 from Advance Auto Parts. We need 2 cabin filters but when you buy the them, usually them come in pairs of 2.

As long as you have the air conditioner on while you recirculate the air, you should not have mildew/mold problems. The air conditioner "dries" the air by taking humidity out of it. Drier air = lower mildew/mold. Recirculating the air while you run the air conditioner will also cool down the air in your car faster. Constantly recirculating humid air using the heater or the vent will likely lead to things growing in your cabin filter and ductwork.
