k20a3 (stock) vs. D17 (turbo)
I am going to be doing something to my 01 civic ex soon. Should I put a stock k20a3 in the vic, or should I turbocharge the D17 at 6 psi? I might end up doing the header and intake to the k20a3, but if I do the swap I wont be able to afford anything else. Which is faster, a 01 civic ex D17 turbocharged, or a 01 civic ex K20a3 (stock) swap?

Even an A2, the D17 would probably win or edge out from the K20. K20A's with I/H/E are only putting down 18X WHP. I have seen T3/T4 Hybrid D17's throw down 180-205 whp at 8 PSI.
k20a3 you get about 165whp with various bolt on's. it's more reliable but i think they both cost the same in the end. Here's a checklist of stuff you need for the swap http://www.hasport.com/News/Articles/ESK1parts.htm

here are some nice k20z1's ...
199whp i/h/e k20z1 http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread...highlight=dyno
200 whp i/h/e k20z1 http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread...highlight=dyno
I retract my previous statement ... turbo t3/t4 hybrid = driver's race with a k20a2 i/h/e ... but k20a2 i/h/e/hondata > t3/t4 hybrid

edit: I just realized ... why are we arguing 8 psi? ... the original poster asked about 6 psi

imo, 6 psi t3/t4 d17 = drivers race with i/h/e k20a3
drivetofast dyno'ed at 155 whp at 5 psi with his sf turbo kit. another member dyno'ed 185 whp at 8 psi with the same kit

if you wanna post wrx-boost leveled d17's, then let's add some more boltons to the k20a2
http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread.php?t=245242
k20a"2" w/ dc5r cams, i/h/e/kpro ... 13.6 .. may I remind you that this is in a FULL interior rsx ... and you guys are running weight-reduced civics.
want more? I can do this all day.

And also to make a second point, to get a Turbo D17 to compete in a straight line race with a Turbo K20 is gonna cost you ALOT more money then it would to do a swap and turbo it.

If you look in the long run, not in the ricer perspective of "more power for cheap" a k20 swap pwns a D17 turbo.
the end.

lmaoSure any motor can blow up, but a improperly built turbo motor will blow alot quicker than any motor.

BTW Hawk, some people want to keep the original power plant in your car. Wen you beat someone it would be alot more satisfying (to me) to say yeah it's still a D17 (Even though it's boosted) than oh yeah I scrapped it for a more powerful engine. I mean I'm not hating but the whole car scene is a "do what YOU want to do" scene. I would like to keep the D17 instead of swapping, you wanted to swap. Were still both 7thgener's at heart, we just have differn't goals. =)

1. it was cheap, 5500 bucks aint bad for what i got.
2. i know its a better built motor and it would/will wistand what i do to it alot better than a turbo d17.
3.) 6 speeds and 8 grand is fun

When my old motor died i was planning on buying another d17 and turboing it, then i began to do some research about the swap and one kinda fell on me. I really doubt i'd be road racing/auto crossing if i had a turbo d17. Torque steer is not fun when your road racing.

I went the route of turbo because
1)Show reasons (Works both ways for k20 or turbo)
2)I'm only keeping my car for a eyar and I can unbolt the turbo and sell it as stock
3) Your right about the turbo and road racing... and I can't hink of a third so I'm just leaving this one out lmao

make sure you let them know at least that it was run with a turbo, cause there will be more wear on that engine and otherwise thats not being honest.
