noob' question.. changing oil
People have always said to change your oil every 3000 miles, and I'm curious to know why, with the new civic, yo can go upwards of 10,000 under normal driving conditions. almost sounds to good to be true I'm not a hard driver, but I do drive long distances, so just to be safe I'll probably change it around 7k.
Your right 10K is to long. I wouldn't go over 3.5K between changes. Even if you don't drive hard our cars get power from high RPM's. That is a lot of friction and it tends to break oil down. Just a little aside. I heard of a lady who bought a caddy. She didnt know that the oil had to be changed. At about 50000 miles the engine went. She had it taken to the dealer. When they took off the oil pan it was like tar. Don't let this happen to your honda. It almost seems equivalent to child neglect. Don't hurt your baby.

Once your oil loses viscocity due to thermal breakdown (heat caused by friction breakes down your oil to the point where it no longer carries heat away or lubricates as it should) your engine begins to wear and tear quicker. I won't go over 3000 miles w/o changing my oil. Remember, oil is the lifeblood of your car. If you want the engine to last you better take care of it. I'd rather spend 10 bucks on 4 qts of oil and a filter every month an a half than one or two grand rebuilding that puppy after a few years.
Just mho...

The spark plugs in our cars are platinum, so they should last 100,000 miles. I'm not going to change mine until my maintenence schedule tells me to. I'll change my oil every 5,000 miles as in the maintenence schedule for severe conditions. The engineers know about the engine, so they say 5,000 miles for a reason. Then again, the maintenence schedule only goes up to 120,000 miles, so maybe they say to change it every 5,000 because that's not exactly healthy for the enigne, but healthy enough to get the car to 120,000 miles? Who knows?
When I did my first oil change at a little over 5,000 miles, I noticed that the oil was ready to be changed. I saw this display of how oil looks like when it's ready to be changed and my oil looked like it should look like when it was ready. They also showed what oil looks like when it's bean in the enigne too long. Mine didn't look like that, so... I think I'll change mine every 5,000 miles.
