I just got back from the funeral and I had never expected to see so many people, especially viets. There were a few South Viet (ARVN) ex soldier there as well. The funeral itself lasted about 2 hours, and I guess my friend and I were the only ones in our desert uniform. Now to answer your question of who he is...
Binh was only 26 years old when he was killed by a improvised explosive device in Central Baghdad, he was part of the 181st Armor Batallion for the California National Guard and it was his last year in the service. His job was a weapon specialist, basically a repair personnel on small arms. His father Van was a second lieutanant in the South Vietnamese Army back in 1972 (I met one of his compatriot "Dinh" who was a first lieutanant in the ARVN back in 1966) I guess Staff Sergeant Duong who was there with him that day when Binh was heading out somewhere without telling SSG Duong and SSG Duong was wondering where Binh was at. SSG Duong called through the singar radio to reach Binh but there was no answer, 10 minutes later, one of his soldier reported that Binh was dead, he just didn't know how to react to it but only feel sorrow and remorse.
So after the funeral, Binh's dad's friend "Dinh" and SSG Duong asked my friend and I if we wanted to go somewhere and eat with them and of course we said yes. So when we're in there, all Dinh and SSG Duong talked about was Binh and his father "Van". After that, Dinh paid for the meal so that was really cool of him. But then even though tonight, I still look back at Binh's family and thought to myself ,"I wish that had never happened to him. I know the pain that his family is going through just like it when I had lost one of my good buddies in Iraq." Lets not forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I am happy that there were so many people who came to pay respect to him and to say farewell. I
