what kind of welder needed for exhaust and headers?

What kind of welder(s) can be used to weld a custom exhaust (304 stainless steel). How about welding custom header/exhaust manifold (also 304 ss)? I read TIG welder is recomended, but MIG can be used.

I would recommend having it TIG welded. Mig will work, but for apperance wise, TIG is superior.

^^I agree. TIG would be best, but MIG will do...if you get stainless wire. If you are trying to learn welding.....I'd suggest not learning on something that thin. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. Yes, I want to learn welding. I understand headers and maybe even exhaust would be too difficult for a noob. Just wanted to know what type of welder I should look for.

Look for a MIG welder with gas. For mild steel some people like 25/75 co2/argon, or just argon works as well. I would get a welder and go get some scrap and start practicing. Stainless is a whole nother concept.
