Tip-tronic vs. manual?
is having a car that has an automatic transmisson with the tip-tronic/sport-tronic shifting option, just as good as having a manual trans?
like i kno its better to turbocharge a manual trans and its kinda pointless to put turbo in an auto, but whut if it has tiptronic?

actually i was just watching a show the other night where this guy that knows almost everything about cars was drivin around a new porsche with tiptronic... he says on the track it was faster than a manual could ever be (i dont recall him actually shifting even). he said it upshifted at 7k automatically, and when you blipped the gas correctly it would downshift into the correct gear perfectly... he then even took it to the strip with street tires and spanked some muscle car with slicks.. but then again it could get a little boring not shifting
when my bro got his rx-8 i test drove both 6 speed and at with tip-tronic. To me, there was a HUGE difference. 6 speed had a lot more "go" and u can really feel it. The tip-tronic accelerated slow like an at, u can just change gears manually instead of the car doing it for u. Either way, the tip-tronic was not like the 6 speed at all. Which prompted him to get the 6 speed
.
. doesnt it depend on specifically what kind of tranny the tip-tronic option comes with?
mythinking is this: the sequential sportshift on the RSX base and Prelude Auto are basically auto trannies with the option of shifting whenever the person wants and not when the computer wants: hence its still an auto just with an extra option, meaning still the torque converter, no mechanical clutch, etc....
but trannies like the SMG and SMG-II in the M3 and M5 are real clutchless manual transmissions with optional comptuer control (something to that extent) with no fluid-driven torque converters (?).
maybe thats why the majority of the tip-tronic trannies are slow since they may be simply an auto tranny with an extra option; no mechanical advantage.
with the not-real tiptronic transmissions, they are no better than automatic transmiissions (in most cases) since they still have the same power loss in the drivetrain.

its never pointless to turbo an auto............ hopefully i will get slips next summer some time when i get my levle 10 kit on the auto tranny and show that auto can be faster then manual (of corse with more money
)
) Mmm....everything barring an SMG transmission and some of the the new Manumatics coming out of Audi are comparable to automatic. Those manumatic SMG trannies though, wow can they ever shift fast, I think setting it to the fastest shift setting voids some variety of warranty though doesn't it? (someone confirm this..)

.Anyways... Tiptronic is just a gimmick. It actually makes an automatic shift slower since the user inputs the command, rather than the computer doing it for itself. Its still an automatic transmission, with torque converter and sluggish linkages.
Transmissions like SMG and Ferrari F1a are manual transmissions with computer actuated hydraulic clutches. The computer does the pedal work for you and shifts the gears when you pull the paddle, but you must pull the paddle yourself.
The Audi DSG is a cross between the 2. Its very complex, but basically it preselects the next gear and spins it up to speed, then when you shift, the change is almost instantaneous. I believe it does have an auto mode, but its pretty quick.

boilermaker said it...
im pretty sure all the lower end cars (35k<) are just autos that the user decides when to shift if he/she wants to
i think porsche had the first real tiptronic, and its the real deal, and what you see in family cars and the such is just spin offs of the concept, i.e. the eclipse's tranny

i shouldnt have added the supras cuz i seen where one guy has a ecu mod that doesnt engage his wheels till like 4000 rpms or something like that so he could launch in the auto ..... that would be a bad idea for daily driving pullin up to a redlight and everytime you'd have to smokem just to get the car movin

An interesting note about the AT models, because you don't have to shift, you can keep your foot on the gas through the gears, leaving the throttle plate open --- since it stays open, the turbo doesn't have to spool in every gear, creating what some people believe is a quicker car in the upper RPMs
i used to think an auto boosted was retarted till someone explained it to me kinda like that

i think it will depend greatly on the car manufacturer/cost, obviously a more expensive car like a bmw or an audi will have a smoother and better tiptronic transmission than say a chrysler or a pontiac or whatever. this is speaking from experience, ive driven both a late 90s 300m and a 2003 bmw 3 series both w/ tiptronic.
all in all, i think they both sucked. there is a noticeable delay between the time you shift to when the gear changes. so its pretty much a manual automatic...as apealing as that sounds.
if you are looking for a fun driving experience where you are connected with the car, get a manual, if you just use the car to go from A to B and occasionally want to "shift" yourself...still get a manual. LOL
