ARP Headstuds
I am about to get ARP to begin manufacturing headstuds for the D17A2 motor. I might be able to get a slightly discounted price for an initial order (emphasis on the maybe), but if you're waiting for better headstuds this is the first chance you'll have to get some. I sent some stock head bolts in so that they can make their castings and they are supposed to call me back early this week and tell me exactly when the headstuds will be available.
Just in case you don't know the benefit, stock Honda head bolts, especially on the D-series are notorious for weakening over time and allowing the head to lift, causing cooling system pressurization, and in the extreme blown headgaskets, chipped heads, and blown motors. ARP headstuds are about 1000x stronger, most race teams use them and have never had a problem with head lift. They can handle 200,000psi of pressure, while the stock can handle only about 1000psi.
I'm having a problem with head lift over 5psi right now and I've been turboed for about two years now, I know of one other 7th gen that's been turboed for about a year and a half and he's beginning to have the same problem. The kits retail for around $90, so not horribly expensive, but they are necessary.
If you are interested, post up and let me know, and when ARP calls me back I'll see if I can get a discount for a larger initial order.

yeah...probably next summer i will be doing the headgasket, studs and possibly blockguard. Next week i will be installing the turbo...so who knows I may need it sooner...I plan on babying it tho. RiceBurner...Hot Color!!!! BLUE RULES!
A WELL DESIGNED blockguard usually wont. technology and experience have gotten alot better in the last few years. I only have 19.5k mi on my car in 2.5 years so it doesnt get driven alot. I have a company truck to use whenever I want so I'm all set. If it blows up then I'll just buy a new motor to sleeve and build. I dont car as long as I am fast.

As of yet, I have not seen an aftermarket headgasket.
I'll talk to Cometic this week, see if I can get them interested. I have an extra stock headgasket to send them for a pattern if they need it.

I am down for the studs. Also, I beleive KMS has a copper gasket for us. I emailed them last fall and they quoted me like $75 plus shipping.

ARP told me that they would keep the casting for my head studs, that way if anyone else ordered them, they would be able to make them quickly. If I make a larger order in the beginning, they will be more likely to mass produce them, as well as you getting your headstuds more quickly.

Typically, a full set for a D-series motor is around $90 retail for headstuds. ARP said that they needed to look at the stock bolts I sent them to make sure, but to expect the price to be around there.
I'm hoping they may give a discount for a large initial order, we'll see about that when they call me with a ship date.

Just as an update, we're also going to get main cap bolts set up for people building internals.
I talked to someone at ARP's fabrication today, they said that it'll take a few weeks to get me a prototype set, and if those work, then it'll take about 3 months before the studs are available as a stock item. He said he'll do some checking about producing 4 or 5 sets right off the bat and let me know if that's something they can do. Same deal with the main caps.
He wasn't able to give me a cost yet, he said that will all depend on the measurements of the studs themselves.
The guy at ARP knew that there is the desire for their parts, and it sounds like they're willing to start producing as soon as they can. I'll keep you all posted as the project goes on.

Just as an update, I have sent the measurements they asked for, and a stock head bolt for comparison, just waiting on them to get back to me with a test set. Hopefully soon, the guy at ARP sounded like they would be able to get them out fairly quickly.

Re: ARP Headstuds
Giving life to the thread again.
I thought the other D16 head bolts fit for our car, and they started listing the D16's part number for our D17's? - Was this the process for figuring that out, or did they really go through and make several sets and then step back and realize they are the same?
Doubt anyone one will respond to this that orig posted in the thread, but worth a shot.

Re: ARP Headstuds
D16Z's have been tried several times, they work, just like plenty of other d16 stuff like valves/springs/retainers. how that was discovered, i dont know.

Re: ARP Headstuds
almost everything thats attached to that head is a D16 carryover. The valvetrain in its entirety, the head studs, etc....
The more I figure out on my own, the more I discover no real R&D went into the internals of the motor. It was basically just a re-engineering of the tried and true (and tired).
It uses Z studs and a Y valvetrain.
