I saw where sf advertises running 8psi on there T3 turbo setup. Can a d17 handle this safely.

well, just to let you know, this will get locked b/c it has been talked about tons of times.

Anyway, a LX/DX has a lower compression ratio than a EX.....so they will be able to handle more boost.....theoretically. IF you running a high grade of fuel and i suggest some sort of alcohol injection to prevent detonation. Your best bet is to get some sort of piggyback and get it tuned to run safely. Many ppl have been running 9-10 psi with no problems, except maybe a blown HG.
