6 speed trans for d17
6 speed trans for d17
alright guys i know this may be a dumb question but is there anyway that you get a 6 speed manual transmission on your d17a has anyone mated one to it or is it even possible thanks guys. peace
a 6 spd transmission is not even worth it to make from a manufacturers standpoint.
it wont be practical for most applications and it sure will be unresponsive if the gear up there is bigger than the 5th that is in there now.
not gonna happen for an economy car like the d17. 5 gears are good enough.

Besides, all the usual 6speeds run in reverse if put on our motors. It can't work, and the D17 does not have enough torqe for a 6th gear. Yeah, it would be nice...

The first 6 speed FWD car Honda made is the RSX-S, it spins the opposite way and goes on the other side of the engine. The B-series and H-Series transmissions were all 5 speeds, but they're rod linkage and I don't think they'd fit either.
Almost all 4 bangers rev up at highway speeds... they still don't burn a lot of gas. The engine runs pretty lean if you use the cruise control on the highway and you'll still get 35-40 to the gallon.
To all you people who ask why you'd do it?
You don't put 6th above 5th. You move 2, 3, 4, and 5 closer together and put 6th where 5th was, or maybe slightly taller. That way the car accelerates faster since you can keep it in the super narrow powerband common to every Honda engine. If they can make an 8 speed box, it would be for the better.

Well, not to split hairs, but the first 6spd front drive Honda product was the Legend 3.2 V6 with the 6spd manual.
Of course, here in the US it was an Acura....

A civic doesn't need 6 gears. It would be pointless. The engine doesn't make enough power to require it so it. I feel honda should have made the prelude a 6 speed. That car actually needs it. The civic si from 99-00 could also use it. 4750 rpm at 70 mph. that is insane and extremely loud.

^^^ you realize Fiat makes a 7 speed econobox right?
Making power has NOTHING to do with this. Gears are a function of a useable powerband, since Hondas have very little usable range of power, the more gears you can stuff in a transmission casing, the better it would be.
I don't understand where you all get off on power having anything to do with the transmission ratios.
Take 1st, raise the ratio, take 2nd, shorten it up a little, put 3, 4 and 5 in the ratios where 2-4 and 4 used to be, put 6th a little taller than what 5th used to be.
3rd gear is way too damn long, I would have loved to be able to have a 3rd gear that revved up at lower speeds and hit 4th at something lower than 85 yesterday. When you've got about 1700 useable RPMs for hard driving, you can't be sitting in gear from 50 up through 85 waiting for 4th gear.

How about a cone transmission like the hybrid? say bye bye to gear shifting period... auto or not!
but if you seriously want a 6 spd, might aswell save up big and swap in the k20a2 and the 6spd if you want it that bad. hmm if you have the green you can do anything these days...

here's how to get a 6 speed for your d17.. ditch the d17 and swap with an rsx-s block... that'll give you your 6 gears

Boilermakers Right, the # of gears has nothing To do with the HP of the engine and every thing to do with Usable power band.
Look at the old muscle cars, Most had 4 speeds and some even had only 3 speed transmissions.... The reason you dont see alot of 6 speeds is because of cost. Plane and simple. Just like why our cars have McPhearson Struts rather then double wishbone. So honda could save a bit of $$$.
And the reason peoples say "Every gear is fast" in a 6 speed is because they run Short gears. Shorter gearing = faster acceleration, no matter what engine you put it on. thats why I run "Short" tires when i autocross, to shorten the final gear ratio for better acceleration.
