there was an article on this saying how some of these prices are ridiculous. how it only costs $1 for them to process bounced checks yet they still charge us $20-30 for it.
Also how its ILLEGAL for the banks like Bank of America and Wells Fargo to charge $5 when you want to cash a check.

Yeah I have had a couple of those pop up. Major PITA. Unfortunately, nothing that we can do abuot them that I have found yet. And believe me, Ive looked for any way to get that $$$ back.
HEY! I feel ya on the charges, but yeahs. . that's WAMU for you, since they do offer free checking. I work at a bank. And we offer free checking, we're more reliable and customer connected. WAMU is more for people who cash checks or keep low low balances. DAVID, the banks do have a right to charge you those prices, after all, they're a bank. . . not a check cashing facility. PM me for more info if you'd like to open up a FREE checking with my bank. Also, if you'd like to gain the highest interest out there for a SAVINGS account, ING banking is a good bank. They offer, i believe 2.10 % interest, compared to .25 from other banks. PM, as i said for more info or help on banking situations. Balancing your check book is good too, i know some banks, like WAMU offer ONLINE banking. . . you can balance your checkbook online. And for your overdrafts, see if WAMU offers an OVER DRAFT protection, or LINE of credit. In that case, if you ever do run out of cash in your checking, and go below zero, you can transfer money from your line of credit to your checkig, and the fee wouldn't be so high.

I am a member of bank of america. I had overdraft charges to. I did not have a record of it so I talked to the person who set me up with my account and the fees were removed. They handed me a log book and told me to use this book so I dont get charge for over draft fees. I would just walk and ask them if there is any chance that they can remove atleast one of the over draft fees if you do not have previous ones.

Dude, i had WM...way back in the day!! but they charged me over $100 in overdraft charges, after i had closed the account! Something kept trying to get money, and they let it go thru time and time again. So i said, thats ur fault, im not paying. They said this would interfere with my credit, but it hasn't yet...and this was 4 years ago. they also said that if i didn't pay the charges, then i wouldn't be able to open another bank account at another bank....wrong again!!! so i say, just don't pay em...go to another bank and open another account...use the new one, and screw washington mutual!!
Yes, it happened to me a month ago when my insurance company processed my payment twice... (sort of my fault cause i didnt know they had automatic deduction setup) and i had sent a payment via phone. So 3 charges went in from like jack in the box, fry's electronics (bought a pack of cds) and another charge (forgot what it was) and i got charged 66 bucks. When my friend used to work there at WAMU, he used to remove them every time. If you ask nicely, they'll remove one or two, or sometimes all. Tell them you made a mistake making a payment or something and entered too many digits. They have the power to over ride them. Also another thing, no matter what ANYBODY tells you, overdraft charges DO NOT affect your credit unless you pass 40 days without covering it up. $22 is a PITA, but I overdraft on purpose in anticipation of my next pay check if I need to buy something expensive.. like a set of tires.

i have navy federal credit union...and they don't have overdraft charges. If you write a check, and theres not enough $$, then they just transfer from your savings and cover the check...but they only do this like 4 times in a month....after that, they start charging you like $6 or something.
About WM charges....those charges don't affect ur credit at all!!! its been over 4 years, and nothing on my credit report, or negative marks or anything!!! THey don't send you anything in the mail...its just a scam!!! a way for them to make money..the workers just tell you all this scary stuff cuz mostly the free checking is used by kids (young ppl) and they want to scare you.

spoildsteph, it doesn't affect your credit report at all. If you leave over draft chargesw on an account for a certain amount of days, the accoutn will FORCE CLOSE. They send you a letter saying you have X amount of days to pay it off before you end up on CHECK SYSTEMS. CHECK SYSTEMS is a list of that banks get that tell who can open up an account. They meant that if you don't pay steph, you'll be put onto it. It last for about 5 to 10 years. Im unsure about your situation though, but try opening an account at another bank just cuz. . .won't charge you anything, just need two ID's and what not. If they let you open one up, then you're not affected. If they say no, your on check systems. It's not your credit being affected, it's your bank account relationship. What i suggest is that you keep track of your balances. . or like i said earlier, get an OVERDRAFT prortection account, where you link two accounts so one can transfer funs to the other just in case it falls short of 0. LoL, please don't take the rash decision and don't pay at all. You'll regret, like today, i had some guy with 56 overdrafts on his account and it was force closed because he left it in a negative overdraft for 2 weeks. He's on check systems now and he won't be able to open up a checking or savings account at ANY bank. Only a SECURED account, meaning cash can only be deposited into the account; no checks, no wires, no nothing. AGAIN, i urge you to IM me or PM me for more information becuase this can get out of hand if you leave it at an overdraft. To the rest of you, balance ur check/savings BOOK! Overdrafts are expensive. . .BTW, FREE checking is used by people who can't afford a REGULAR CHECKING. FREE checking are used by everyone. . . those who just want to cash checks and cannot hold a reg balance of 100 a month in their accounts. SORRY to say steph, but banks aren't there to scare you. . .they're the real thing.
BTW, federal CREDIT unions are a differnt kind of bank. . they're more for people with good credit or people who qualify with their requirements. Sometimes they're banks that manage a companies account. . IE Northrope Grum. G luck with the checking account. . .

I disagree with you on the check systems thing. I had a negative balance from overdraft charges for a long *** time, and when i did finally go to open a new account, i had no problems. I seriously say jsut don't pay em...they are ridiculous anyways....just my personal opinion...

ohhs. . i do think they are ridiculous, because i use to be overdrawing at WAMU before i started working for the bank. They charge 25 PLUS the over drawn amount. What it use to be with WAMU was that they chargedy U IMMEDIATELY (spelling unsure) after you've overdrawn the account. Now they give you a certain amount of days after sending you a letter saying that you're account is overdrawn. Im not to sure how it quite works now, but it was very differernt a year ago.

My account was negative for over 30 days, at wm...i've never had a negative balance since i've been with a different bank. This all took place like 4 years ago...and it hasn't affected anything...opening new accounts at other banks, nothing! I haven't paid WM cuz i feel that they are in the wrong here, since i cancelled the service for which i was bein overdrawn for, and yet they still tried to take money at least 5 times.... So my charges were 100 in overdrafts, plus the original charge...its just a way for the bank to make money...they wouldn't help me out at all...so thats why i say its a scam. Good for you that you work in a bank, i hope its not WM!! i feel they have crappy customer service and were unwilling to help clear up THEIR mistake....
No, WAMU is a bank that actually has accounts at other banks. They're sort of a second bank. But n/e whoo, i represent UBOC. The best bank out there for a reg. checking account would be either, what you have, a credit union account, or Bank of the West for CA peoples. I also htink for the best savings, is ING. Out of all the interest earned yearly. . they have a pretty good interst rate. 2.10 represent. lol tha's pretty high if you ask
