3 cars going 200km/h+ on QEW, 1 lost control, 1 dead

Listen up guys... stupid drivers on the road, and idiots who don't wear seatbelts cuz it's "not cool" (or whatever) is causing the police to crack down HARD on street racing, which in turn cracks down on any "fast looking" or modified cars....

The Accord, a favourite of street racers, had illegal blue tail lights and the front tires had been spun so much in the past that they were bald.
??????

I can't beleive the father of the deceased... He said he talked with the driver that killed his son, and believe him that a trailer swerved and "caused" the accident... Accident or not, at such speeds, forget it... bye bye. I'll say tho, Cam Wooley is the man... I love his Highway 400 Cottage country stories...

I'll admit I was driving like a dolt myself yesterday... Had a dragon boat race in Pickering.... drove like an idiot... Gotta go remove the lead from my foot.

Race on QEW ends in death
3 cars travelling 200 km/h, police say

Victim, 22, thrown 15 metres in air

ANDREW MILLS
STAFF REPORTER

A 22-year-old Seneca College student was killed early yesterday in a 200 km/h street race involving three cars on the QEW in Oakville.

Saleem Scott was one of five people in a Honda Accord that spun out of control, flipped over several times and landed 80 metres away from the highway around 4:45 a.m. Scott, who was in the backseat and was not wearing a seatbelt, was catapulted about 15 metres through the air. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

The two other racing cars continued eastbound on the QEW without stopping.

The three other passengers in the Honda received minor injuries and the driver was not hurt. The driver and front-seat passenger were the only ones wearing seatbelts.

The crash was the second fatal street-racing accident in the Toronto area in a week.

In all, three lives have been lost.

"It was absolutely wild and reckless driving," said Sergeant Cam Woolley of the Ontario Provincial Police. "There were vehicles all over the road, cutting each other off, slaloming all across the road."

The three cars had been racing eastbound on the Queen Elizabeth Way from at least Burlington when the 23-year-old male driver lost control of the silver, four-door Honda, witnesses told police. The car landed in a ditch at the Trafalgar Rd. exit, rolled over the on-ramp and into another deep ditch, coming to a stop in the long reeds in the middle of the cloverleaf, Woolley said.

Scott was taken to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Charges have not yet been laid.

Yesterday afternoon, Scott's family and friends quietly gathered in the garden of the Downsview housing complex on Driftwood Ave. where he lived with his aunt, Rose Duncan, since moving from Jamaica four years ago.

"Five in the car and everybody else walked out, except for Saleem," said Michelle Young, Scott's 32-year-old cousin. "We're so stunned."

Scott had graduated from Downsview High School and wastraining at Seneca College to be a flight attendant.

He also worked as a salesperson at a Stitches clothing outlet in the nearby Jane Finch Mall, where he was very well liked.

"He was a friend to everybody," said Grace Longo who works at Cucina Bella, across from Stitches. "The guy was smiling 24/7."

Upon hearing of her son's death, Scott's mother, Carol Foster, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., had a seizure and was admitted to hospital, family members said. She is expected to travel to Toronto for her son's funeral, which has not yet been arranged.

Scott's father, Gregory, who said he spoke to the driver yesterday morning at the hospital, believes that the car lost control because of a swerving trailer driving beside it and that the crash was purely an accident.

"My son is not stupid to be in a vehicle that is going that fast," he said. "I know he doesn't like speeding, straight up."

But Woolley said police were certain the crash was the result of a race. "We don't think about this as an accident. It's predictable and it's preventable," Woolley said. "This was like the poster car for street racing."

The Accord, a favourite of street racers, had illegal blue tail lights and the front tires had been spun so much in the past that they were bald.

Yesterday's crash comes a week after two young men were killed when a Honda Civic hit a tree at the corner of Parliament and Adelaide Sts. The car, in which the two were passengers, had been racing at speeds of approximately 100 km/h, police said.

Street racing in and around Toronto has been a summer problem for decades, Woolley said. While some races — especially short drag races — are organized in advance using cell phones and Internet message boards, others, like perhaps the highway race early yesterday, are more impromptu.

Since June, 2001, more than 25 people have been killed in street races in Ontario. "It's that old problem of trying to convince young people that bad things can happen to them," Woolley said.

"Enforcement isn't going to solve this. The police can't be at every place all the time."

On Thursday, nine Toronto-area police forces launched "Operation ERASE," a program aimed at street racing across the region.

"We're trying to influence people to make street racing socially unacceptable," Woolley said.

Police estimate that there are more than 20,000 street racers in the Toronto area alone.

When some guy wreckes his car and injures or kills himself because he was driving wrecklessly, he's an idiot. But when innocent bystanders (passengers or other motorists) get hurt of killed, its a traggedy.

Please guys, lets all make a promise to keep racing limited to the 1/4 mile or motorsports tracks. I say this not as an officer, but as a fellow 7thgen'r. Lets not ever attend the funeral of one of ours.

Eddy.

first off.. i dont believe they were going 200km/h.

what was the other two vehicles.... besides the accord>? no one knows....

.....it's not the first time the police are cracking down on street racing... and if hte officer pulls you over... b/c your car looks modified... most then 80% of hte time.. the officer doesnt know what a modified vehicle is....... but that you "had illegal blue tail lights" hahahaha...

secondly.. if that accord driver was really into the import scene... not one of us are stupid enough to ride or race on BALD tires.....

"spun so much in the past that it was bald"???? who type of driver would keep spinning it? unless it was some young kid who thinks by spinning their tires will make them go faster from the start.......... o_O

.. as for the kid that died.. it was his responsiblily to put on his seat belt.... i feel sorry for the family and all... but racing or not... it's your own responsibility to put on your seat belt... 18 years old or older.... or was it 16?

and the majority of the time.. the story is blown out of proportion.

What your parents don't know... can't hurt them.

So you tell your parents that you don't drive fast... and you drive the speed limit when you're with your parents... that doesn't mean you're not a racer. I think that dad is just ignorant and nieve.

Then again, I think anybody with balded front tires and blue rear lights is a street racer too... However, it could also mean he just likes the styling of the blue lights in the rear, and he's too poor to afford new tires. So you see... it's hard to tell.

I drive the 401 everyday in Toronto and everyday I see trucks driving extremely close to other cars, merging in whenever they can.. so they see an opening, they whip in (regardless how fast you're going in the lane they are merging into)... and they signal when they're like 10% executed the merge.

i wouldnt be surprised if a truck DID cause that accord to serve off.

last time, when me, narc, and cosmicjim went to shannonville... we saw at least two/three crazy *** truck drivers......... and ONE OF THEM almost hit cosmicjim.

and MOST OF THE TRUCKS that we see on our way there... when they make lane changes, they change lanes so hard that, that their truck would tilt when they try to correct their steering after their lane changes.

i dont encourage street racing, and as much as possible i avoid and fight the urge. one thing i have beef with, is that any speed related accident is profiled street racing, and every little modification labels a street racer.

For all we know they werent street racers, but just stupid drivers. majority of accident out there are cuz of dumbass drivers who dont knwo the rules of the road, im not sayin im perfect, im just sayin racers know better.

if a speeding accident were to occur and the car had a sticker that said "modified" it would be a street racer accident, i think thats dumb, profiling for any reason is ridiculous.
