Custom monitor installation
This summer, I think I've figured out a project I want to to do...
I would like to buy a new console and install a tv monitor where the (2002) cupholders are. I would like to angle the screen so it's fully visible from both front seats, but will still be covered if I press the cover part closed.
Is there enough room to do this with a monitor that measures 6-3/8"W x 3-7/8"H x 1-1/8"D?
Also, any tips?

you are trying to install an indash monitor? if so, you will run into many problems, unless you dont care if it pivots or not.
if you are trying to install it in the cig lighter area, the work will be easier, as you only have to rebuild a small panel. however, space is at a premium in that area, and you WILL lose your cup holders. Also, you will ahve to make sure that if it is a motorized unit, that it does not flip up on its own, that that part is manual. otherwise, the screen will swingback and hit your dash. thats not good!
installing it in the actual cup holders is a NEAT idea, i think. it will be very similar to the current volvos out, except lower down. once again, youll definitely not be able to swivel the monitor, so make sure you find one that doesnt flip up on its own. furthermore, there is an added complication, that hte screen will not sit flush with the tops of the cup holders. so you will have to rebuild the console piece, which probbaly means refinishing the whole thing (repainting). the screen, even inside teh unit, will stick up like 3 inches or so from the top of the console, might look a little funny.
its a whole buttload of work, but if you feel up to the challenge, its definitely possible!
now, if its not an in dash screen, jsut standalone, its a piece of cake! those dimensions are kind of rough to work with, which make me think its an in dash unit, but molding a standalone screen to hte cig lighter piece and having it snap back into place should be a breeze, comparitavely.
