Styrofoam Piece Behind Front Bumper

What is it for (something with SRS I assume) and is it absolutely needed even with an aftermarket bumper?

I'm guessing that it's there in case you lightly bump something the styrofoam will absorb the impact and not trigger the bags. Sound right?

it will help you in an accident...I think it basically saves you from the airbags deploying from something that isn't serious enough to need airbags.. I remember a story on here that someone took their styrofoam piece off, and a bug landed on the piece behind it.. so they hit it with a hammer and BOOM their airbags went off. I'm pretty sure the sensor for the airbags is somewhere behind that styrofoam.

It's there for small bumps you don't need it the air bags are not made to go off unless over 30 mph or a decress of speed by 25 mph in a short time followed by a bump on one of the sensors i took mine off.

the SRS airbag sensors are on either side of the radiator support. the front bumper has no sensors in it.

as stated above, the styrofoam has nothing to do with the srs (safety restraint system <--i think that is the acronym), there are sensors mounted under you bumper cover but not attached to you bumper cover. anytime you want to remove you bumper cover, its recomended to disconnect you batter to prevent from airbags being accidently deployed. as for the stryofoam, its used to absorb energy from an impact. in nj, i have known some ppl who failed inpection because aftermarket kits did not contain this piece....however i know many more who passed inspection w/o this piece. styrofoam is very good at absorbing impacts, i was reading an article of how nascar uses SaFER walls......SaFER stands for Steel And Foam Energy Reduction and how it saves lives

I removed the metal peice the styrofoam is supposed to be connected to, so I did not have to remove anything there were just bolts holding that meal peice behind it in and there was nothing in it or anything I had to remove or anything electrical

It is called the bumper reinforcement. It is just an impact absorber.

might as well leave it there ... if anything it can keep the kit from rubbing the metal ...

I guess i'm the only one here who actually HAS a reason for having the styrofoam.

When i removed my bumper and put it back on without the styrofoam, my front bumper sagged. Maybe it's just me though.
