power exceeds wiring limits?
so i'm curious if 550W rms is too much for an 8 guage wiring kit, which is rated for 500W. i mean...do i have much room to go over? what can potentially happen? also...i believe that the amp's pwoer rating might be underestimated (rockford fosgate power series) ...
thanks
thanks

what fuse is on the power wire? if its 80 or bigger i'd say get maybe a 50 or 60 amp and that would protect you just fine. don't worry about the wire thickness though, 4 gauge upgrade would hardly be noticable ever.

Your amp wattage has ZERO to do with the power wire size. What does matter is the amprage that the amp can draw, and the distance that it draws it from the batter. These 2 things will determine the size of wire that you need. Ill see if i can find the chart for this

but see amplifiers are about 50-75% efficient (depending on class and many other things). this is not an exact science, and the fact is his current wiring setup in no way is hurting the amp or his car significantly.
i have had one amp that told me max current draw in the manual. fuses don't tell you a thing really either about max current draw.

im not saying he is hurting it. Im just stating the proper way to determine the wire size. Best way to determine wire size is look up amp specs , they usually list max amps draw. Measure the distance of your wire. Then figure out the best wire size for your need. Its always best to have too much then not enough.
