Diff between struts, shocks, springs and coilovers? I'm a suspension newbie. :(

Just to start off, I know nothing about suspension. Not even sure what to search for. I've tried but I still don't know what the difference between struts, shocks, springs and coilovers are.

I'm wondering what parts can be interchanged with what and what would be recommended if I wanted a height I can adjust. Do coilovers do the functions of springs and struts or what? Arg... I'd like my Christmas present to be an answer to this.
