balance issues
balance issues
I talked to white rabbit a little about my problem and he was very helpful as usual, but I was just curious if anybody else has this problem or am I just crazy. I used to use my stock headunit with infintiy reference 605cs components and never had any problems. Now I've replaced my headunit with the nakamichi cd-400 and for some reason it always sounds like my passenger side speakers sound a lot louder than the drivers side. If I kind of sit in the middle I think it seems ok, but how come I never noticed this problem before? Also is anybody have problems like this and what have you done to balance it out better all around?

well, 1 question and 1 thing for you to try
1 - is your setup identical to what it was when you were running the stock deck?
2 - record a test tone on a cd, get a multimeter, and read the rca voltage on both the left and the right. it could be a headunit problem.
when i ran speakers in stock locations i would never have teh balance on center. id run it slightly over to teh left.

Also, I've started thinking about my original setup more, and I think its possible that I might have had the speaker wire running to the line-output converters out of phase. So my front components might have been out of phase with the rear speakers and subs.... hmmmm.....

Think about this. You sit in the drivers seat, and no one is sitting in the passenger seat. Your passenger side mid is producing sound and its angled toward the center of the car, which will eventually hit you. The driver side speaker on the other hand is angled towards the center of the car, but you are not in the radius of the sound field, and your left leg is blocking most of the sound.
Solution to the problem....
Cut off your left leg.

dups - I have a 98 sedan with what I believe is faulty stock speaker wiring - I noticed the right passenger speaker was cutting out intermittently a year after we bought it. Having upgraded the head unit and all four speakers, the factory wiring remains the only constant.
Not saying you have a wiring problem, but keep it in mind.

yeah, my speakers don't cut out or anything. I'm pretty sure its just me and my position reletive to the rest of the speakers. Its just kind of wierd though because other people I know usually complain about the drivers side sounding louder then the rest. Thanks for the advice though.

quite possibly so. the farther you go off axis with sound, the more sound you lose
this is of course very very dependant on speakers.
the stock speakers are probably (note i sy probably, meaning i dont know) designed to have a very good off-axis response.
now some speakers are even designed for stock locations as opposed to kickpanels.
take this tweeter for example :

you can see tht on axis, or in a kickpanel or somewhere facing you, the high end peaks way high.
but off to an angle, it sounds much better.
ok, im ranting and getting off course here
final note:
one speaker may be louder than another on or off axis, all depends on its characteristics. as to the speaker farther away sounding louder, it all depends on a combination of the closer speakers off-axis response vs the distance vs the frequency vs etc. etc. etc
you get a speaker that has HORRENDOUS off axis response, and yes, the passenger side will definitely be louder
