I've seen this done before, but I need to ask; do I need to use high-temp paint? I know of some normal spray paint that matches my red exterior almost flawlessly, so I really want to use that if I can. Does the spark plug cover (the thing that says HONDA and VTEC on it) get too hot for normal paint? Thanks.
Yes, it's an Acura EL

I painted mine with Duplicolor Metalcast. The cover doesn't really get very hot, in fact I opened my hood and popped it off to paint it right after driving my car for half an hour.

i painted mthe honda vtec on mine with SSM touch up paint, so my wire cover is anodized blue with silver lettering.. no problems yet.. although, the letters look hella swirly cuz the touch up paint applicator sucks to use...

i forget who, but i got a secret tip on it....paint the valve cover (wire cover, spark plug cover, whatefver) the color you want the background to be. Then take a sharpie and write on the letters...looks great. I want to do mine tomorrow...just have to buy some paint.
ya
I painted my cover as well, i sanded it lightly with sand paper (wet), then used high temp primer, and high temp paint. You dont need to use high temp paint because it doesnt get that hot, but i did just in case. It came out tight and i have no problems with it.

I used high temp paint, not because it necessarily needs it, just for the piece of mind it gives me. All i have to say is take time to mask off the letters on the valve cover, it looks 100% better when they are a diff color IMO. Just get high gloss high temp paint and forget about it.
You don't need high temp paint. The spark plug cover really doesn't get that hot. Even after hours of driving, you can still handle it with bare hands without much discomfort.
Just make sure you clean it well before painting; well just don't have any grease/oil on the surface. Or else your paintjob might not end up that nicely. Some people like to use wash grade acetone on a cloth to clean the cover, but soap/scrubing/water does the trick as well.
