Spring Rates for smooth driving
Spring Rates for smooth driving
Hey, I've been trying to decide which coilovers i should get and i've been reading what everyone has to say about tein, jic, etc. I'm still a little confused on what spring rate is best for a comfortable ride, a ride that you can barely feel the bumps on the road. Would I need a higher sring rate or a lower spring rate. Let me know what you guys think.

Lower spring rates produce squishy rides. None of those "race" coilovers are going to be soft... they've got spring rates up in the 400-650 range. Most of the springs available are down in the 200-300 lb-in range, which are gonna be much softer. Coilovers are designed with "feeling" the road in mind... so they're going to be stiffer and harsher.

also, if you get "lowering" springs then you'll need a higher spring rate to stop the car form bottoming out... and the lower you go the higher the spring rate you'll need. and Boilermakers right, none of the "perfromace" springs were designed for ride comfort.... they were designed for performance.
For a coilover, maybe B&G?? they dont seem to be that sporty. or maybe tein SS or basic? it would probably be a little rougher then the B&Gs but probably not that much. KW type II may be a good choice too. Id avoid Jic, Tein FLex or any other of the performance minded coilover setups... Your basically looking for something with a soft spring rate.
Some thing else that affects ride smoothness is wheels/tires, if you're running on 17s or larger then dont expect a really smooth ride..... especially if they are Heavy wheels, or really low profile tires.
