under normal circumstances, the battery should last an unmodded car for as long as the life of the car. The alternator recharges it, and as long as you don't drain the battery (like leaving lights on, door open, alarm running) it should last.

I've had my car for 2 and a half years and now is when my battery died. I don't drive it much all I did was re-charge it and drive for a while. It works fine now but, I still bought an Optima. I'm waiting to put it in.

When I was a mechanic for over 12 years, I had seen batteries that were 3 months old go bad and batteries last as long as 8 years. Batteries are a fickle bunch, you can have the best alternator, live in a area with mild tempuratures, and do everything right and see them go out in less than a year. Vibration and heat are HUGE factors in the life of a battery.

There is no average life; and unless you have a high performance, high compression engine, spending more money on a "high output" brand name battery is a waste of money. Just by a mid level brand name battery and you'll be fine.

not true... the optima battery out performs the stock battery to no tomorrow... I can't even begin to say how happy I am with it. Its not a waste of money. Its one of the best mods I've done to my car....

Pleae tell me the benifits of the Optima battery, because once the car is started you can basically toss the battery out the window. Your alternator does all the work your car needs to power the accesories and if you need a "better" battery to power your accesories then you really need a higher amp alternator.

I'm not saying that a brand name high cranking amp battery isn't the way to go, but all the battery is for is to start the car, and unless you have a high compression engine, a high cranking amp battery is a waste of money. The stock engine in a Civic can be started with a smaller cranking amp battery without any problems.

I put an optima in my truck, and in my car. Benefits: The Optima can deliver much more starting power for a longer time. It also does not self-discharge nearly as fast as a conventional cell. The optima will RE-charge much faster as well. The spiral wound cell structure does not require a grid to support the lead plates within, so the components can be made of softer and purer materials. Because of it not being a "WET" cell, it is totally sealed and can be UPS shipped. I have seen (swear to god) an optima set up for demonstration with a bullet hole right through 3 cells, and it was working fine. Lastly, The battery holds it's power much longer. What that means to me is that I can get in my truck after 3 months and it starts right up. THAT is awesome.
The optima was developed for harsh duty and military applications.
I think it was worth every cent.
BTW, estimated life so far is 15 Years!!! They don't suffer from sulphation like wet cells.

End of sales pitch

Thank you for pointing that out, I've been reading a lot about dry cell batteries but didn't think they were avalible to the public yet. I guess I was thinking a Optima battery was just a heavy duty standard cell battery. Thank you for clearing that up for me Tinman, and IDQcivic was correct if the Optima is the real deal.

So how much do they cost? and where can you find them?
