air bags...

I was in a pretty bad accident, going about 55mph, and hit a focus that was in my lane stopped (not my fault). I tried stopping, leaving about 15ft of skid marks, front end went into the drivers door of the focus. the air bags did NOT deploy. By the time I hit them I know i had slowed down a bit but not that much. any one know at what speed they are to deploy at, where the sensors are and the fuses?

thanks,
Jon

I'm curious how you rear ended a car and it wasn't your fault. Not saying it was..but can you explain a little better?

well if you take the bumper off, and look at the sensors, they will only deploy when the metal gets crumpled. I hit a deer going 40mph and that part didn't crumple at all. So thats why my air bags didn't go off.

There's no set speed the airbags deploy at. Sometimes they'll go off when you bump a post in a parking lot, sometimes you can smash into another car and nothing will happen.

I had a pretty good cruncher in my '98 vic and the bags didn't deploy. I'm actually glad they didn't, I think they might have hurt me more if they went off. I was wearing my seatbelt and didn't faceplant into the steering wheel or anything, so it turned out okay.

You can check out the pics of my crunched car here.
