My friend removed his valve cover on his 2000 DX to paint it, but from what I heard, you always NEED to replace the headgasket every time you remove the pan. I noticed it wasnt really a gasket, but a piece of rubber weatherstripping type stuff... does he need to replace it?
On a sidenote, he also overtorqued one of the headbolts, and it broke at mid point, any danger of having the bolt broken off in there? As you pull it out with the motor running, you can fill it hitting the internals as they move..

drill into the broken bolt.
go to hardware store and buy a backout tool
this will remove the broken bolt.
torque everything down according to factory standards.
Honda will tell you what it is for free. Call dealership
