so i've grown tired of having my steering wheel turned 15 degrees off when i go straight. i got a piece of string and adjusted my tie rods to even the toe on both sides. this is how i used the string:

i want to know if this is a correct way of using the string? it looked like the body was sticking out the same distance on both sides.
afterwards i did take my car out for a drive and there's no pull whatsoever, it goes perfectly straight.
also lately when i come to a stop sometimes my steering wheel will make a hard pull to the left or right.. any ideas what would be causing that? even after i fixed my alignment, i can slightly notice it. it may have something to do with that nasty pothole i hit awhile back. i just noticed there's black grease all over my driver side strut, so i think it's time to give B+G a call.

You could go to a shop to get it done very accurately once in a while (since it costs money), or you could do it yourself more often a little less accurately. I would DIY.
Anyway, on to your question... Aligning it to the body is not the correct way of doing it. I've been in a frontal accident and I couldn't align it to the body if I wanted to. It would be way off.
Instead of doing it that way I would align it to the rear wheels. Take the string and run it from the rear wheels all the way to the front wheels. You can use just one poing in the rear wheels. Just make sure it's the same point (mirrored) for the other side.
I would attach the string onto the rear wheel to a point that's closest to the center of the wheel. The suspension geometry changes very little there even if you have incorrect toe or camber in back.
I would also do the toe up front with the string and then check it again once the car is on the ground. It changes when it's in the air and when it's on the ground. I would do this... Raise the car, check the toe, adjust the toe, lower the car. Drive around to let everything settle and then check it again. It will be slightly different. You have to do it several times (hopefully just two) to get it right.
Good luck!

thanks grey
yeah i've had it done professionally recently.. and they did a good job, it's just that my steering wheel wasn't straight when they aligned it. sort of like the problem grey had awhile back. i may have to get an entire new tie rod link.. one of my lock nuts is being stubborn, probably bent from hitting a pothole. that would explain my recent steering issues. this may be a job for honda...
