Radar Detector GONE

So I'm in Kingston at Queen's now. My sister goes to Dal in Halifax and she is in a co-op Commerce program. She has a work term this semester, so we decided she should have the car because it'd get more use out there. She asked if she could use my radar detector and my lights and everything I've put in the car, and I told her yes but she is responsible for them and any damage. She asked me if cops can detect the radar detector. I told her some cops have a VG2 detector, which can detect radar detectors, but the radar detector I have is immune and invisible to the VG2 detector. She understood and left to Halifax. She got pulled over in Halifax and got a $215 fine and the radar detector was confiscated. She ratted me out to my parents saying that it was mine because she was on the hook because my parents knew she got pulled over but not what for. They thought it was for speeding, and to get herself out of it, she ratted me out. Cops come out with new technology every year and I guess they had something new that my radar detector couldn't detect. So she got busted. I told her she was responsible for everything of mine in the car. I wasn't going to make her pay for the radar detector, but now that she ratted me out, and my parents are freaking out, I think she should pay for the radar detector. What do you think?

1llmatic will become famous soon enough
you shouldn't have given her the radar detector in the 1st place....getting the detector confiscated is a risk that you take when you have one....a cop can see the detector even if they don't detect it...

yeah i agree. u should have said no to lending the radar detector.
things u buy should be for urself and u shouldnt share it with any one else. sometimes being selfish can get u out of trouble sure it may make u look bad but hey nobody gets hurt

i really think getting a radar detector is no point. as your said, the cops have new technology every year to detect ppl using radar in their car. unless you plan to get a new radar each year with the latest technology to hide from cops, otherwise your radar detector would be old model every year.

just my 2 cents.

Alright I didn't ask for reasoning why I shouldn't of had the radar detector in the first place.

There is no problem with me lending her the radar detector. I lent it to her alongn with everything else in the car on the basis that if anything breaks or anything, she pays for it.

She CLAIMED it was detected by the cops, but that was probably just an excuse to cover her ***. IMO, a cop must of seen it driving by or something.

I heard the same companies that make radar detectors make the radar guns for the cops... and every couple of years or so, they keep uping each other, so every keep buying.

Popkorn should not be trusted
There are only a couple OPP cars equipped with the "radar detector detector". The government doesn't see a point in investing too much money into it, cause not many people have radar detectors.

So unless she was really that unlucky and was driving by an O.P.P that had it turned on, and she was alone. Cause cops can detect it, but if you're driving in a group, it's hard to pinpoint which car has it.

Thats what I was thinking as well. I'm guessing she/you had it mounted right on windshield in plain view, so a passing cop probably saw it, or maybe the cop stopped her for something else (ie. speeding) and she forgot to take it off the windshield. If its VG-2 immune, the cops should not be able to detect it, although I know some detectors claim they are immune but still can detected to some extent.

Radar detectors are illegal in most Canadian provinces with some exceptions like Alberta. In the U.S. they are legal in almost all states with the exceptions being New York and Virginia.

actually a fair number of OPP have been outfitted with new equipment for detecting detectors as well as guns that emit very low powered radar until the trigger is actually pressed, leaving little or no time to react unless you own an escort 8500, beltronics 895, or valentine1. unless you own one of those you shouldn't bother owning one at all.

EDIT: does anyone know if the helicopter can detect detectors?

I think your sister is a rat. No disresprect intended here, but IMO the last people one should ever rat on is family. This is an issue the two of you need to address. Im sure she was just scared and in hindsight, she would agree she should not have sold you out.

But man, that was poor form on her behalf. Mind you, the fact that you would lend out both your car and your radar detecter to your sister speaks volumes about the level of trust and kindness within your family. Don't let this incident come between you guys. Friends come and go, but family is forever.
