Timing Belt Change Questions
I have reached the 90,000 milestone in my 2001 Civic HX and I am thinking about doing the timing kit change with a friend of mine. I was also thinking about throwing in an AEM cam gear in the process but thats not my question.
I have never done a timing belt replacement in a Honda before and I was wondering all the parts necessary to complete the job. I know water pump must also be replaced but what else is needed to finish the job.
Also since I will be rooting around any other good mods anyone would suggest while things are in pieces. I was thinking about AEM pulleys also.
Thanks

Holy crap ... 90,000 miles already. What kinda commute do you have each day?
As for timing belt instructions, seeing as how it's a pretty complex job, you may want to get access to the Helms manual for our cars before starting, just so you know exactly what to do.
And I'm not sure that you need to replace the water pump at the same time as the timing belt From what I understand, if it's working properly, there's no need to replace the pump.

Yeah I drive from Erie PA to Buffalo NY every day...its like 80 miles each way. I go to grad school in Buffalo but the wife and kid are in Erie so its move or drive. I picked drive. It has its good days and its bad but overall I just don't think about it anymore.
I want to mod my car a little to make it more efficient but I don't want to risk causing any trouble for my in terms of reliability and mileage. Any good tips?

do the pullies but don't do the cam gear. the cam gear is worthless unless you have heavily modded your engine..intake manifold, milling the head ect.
Parts needed would be the belt, auto tensioner, water pump and gasket. I think that is it.
from what i have read it looks pretty involved.

The hardest looking step is the removal of the crankshaft pulley. According to my Helms manual, you need a special tool to hold the pulley while you use a 19mm socket on a breaker bar to remove the bolt. The special tool is nothing but a large hollow 50mm socket and breaker bar that allows you use the 19mm socket inside of it to remove the pulley bolt.
Helms lists these special tools as:
Holder Handle- 07JAB-001020A
Holder Attachment- 50mm, offset 07MAB-PY3010A
There are torque specs throughout both procedures of removing and reinstallation over several steps. Doesnt look to hard if your somewhat mechanically inclined and have the right tools.
