Damn rattle fixed!

Just got my 01 EX sedan. Awesome car. 35-40 mpg and it rules.

Anyhoo - I noticed an annoying rattle when I would go over bumps. Sounded like it was coming from in between the doors. SO I disassembled the seatbelt panels and removed the top belt loop... sure enough - the metal rail that mates with the seat belt adjuster is "springy" in that the plastic adjuster would rattle on the metal rail. Took it apart and applied a strip of 1/8" weatherstrip on each rail. Problem solved.

Also had an annoying squeak when I depressed the clutch. Had wifey press on it while I located the culprit - found it was coming from right in the front of the engine - there is a small piston there for the clutch and a boot next to it - pulled the boot away and squirted some wd40 - problem solved there. Then a minor squeak could be heard in the linkage by the pedal on the inside - wd40 - problem solved.

I love it when it's easy

Did you have to go under to car to get at the clutch boot ... or just from above? Post some pics if you can.

This simple fix may help a lot of other people here with the same problem.

How did you get the seat belt panel around the seat belt loop? I tried to back off the bolt but twisted the head off my ratchet.

The bolts have a thread lock substance on them and they are a real pain to get off. It requires a lot of torque. I used my 1/4" socket wrench with the hex socket. I almost gave up but perservance paid off.

Good luck!

I had to get to it from the top, since I cannot do anything from below the car given it's small clearance. With once hand I pull the boot away (it cannot be removed without disassembling a lot of stuff there, and I do not recommend disassembly anyway), and then with the other I had get my can of wd40 down there and squirted the hell out of the linkages behind the boot. Be liberal about it as well. Then the boot has to be put back in place - it pops back into the opening, so don;t let it just dangle there. Oh yeah one last thing - I recommend that people get those tiny cans of wd40 for this job since things are pretty tight down there. Better yet, get a couple finger-fulls of grease on your fingers and apply that as it'll probably do the job better. I also had to "work-out" the squeak by depressing the clutch maybe 20 times.

Good luck!
