You need a cam gear for our cars. you'll get maybe a couple of hp (1-3?) at the wheel. the labor is expensive on our motors. I wouldn't recommend it w/o a cam & dyno session, which will yield much more due to the cam.

I thought that changing the timing only moves the power band and it doesn't gain or loose power.

correct, it only moves it around when you only have 1 cam...

retard is for more high end hp
advance is for more lower end tq

acutally just read this article, its been posted before...

http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/in...technology01a/

"On a SOHC engine, an adjustable cam gear will allow you to move the power curve to a specific area in the rpm band as described above. Like moving your peak power on a high-revving Honda to max out at 4000 to 5000 rpm. Typically to improve bottom end power advancing a SOHC engine will do the trick and the converse is true to enhance top end power. "

Well if that's the case, what's the point of putting one on? I mean, all you're going to do is shift the powerband - not really getting any gains.

Depends on your driving style. You want the peak of your powerband where you use it most. If you race, you want the powerband higher, if you cruise on the freeway, you want it lower.

Edit: i would get a cam as well at the same time, as the labor would not be worth putting just a cam gear. That would get you a lot of power.

crower cams on the way folks! imma grab that **** like hot cakes...since i already have the AEM cam gear....this probably doesn't relate to the subject, but the furthest i've advanced the cam gear was 5 tick marks...i swear man, u have to put a lil muscle into moving that center bolt....anyways...

kinda like da2k1 said - it makes you take off faster, like for a race. but i have hear that its not such a great idea if you ever drive on the highway since you could be in 5th and basicly have then engine maxed out
