Timing
what are the advantages of advancing timing on our cars???
a frind of mine said it could be done and could give some gains, has anyone done this, can i do it another way or do I need a cam gear??

You need a cam gear for our cars. you'll get maybe a couple of hp (1-3?) at the wheel. the labor is expensive on our motors. I wouldn't recommend it w/o a cam & dyno session, which will yield much more due to the cam.

acutally just read this article, its been posted before...
http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/in...technology01a/
"On a SOHC engine, an adjustable cam gear will allow you to move the power curve to a specific area in the rpm band as described above. Like moving your peak power on a high-revving Honda to max out at 4000 to 5000 rpm. Typically to improve bottom end power advancing a SOHC engine will do the trick and the converse is true to enhance top end power. "

Depends on your driving style. You want the peak of your powerband where you use it most. If you race, you want the powerband higher, if you cruise on the freeway, you want it lower.
Edit: i would get a cam as well at the same time, as the labor would not be worth putting just a cam gear. That would get you a lot of power.
