Better sound from subs for $3.00
i went to walmart to pick up a gag gift for a friend's marriage, and the lines were long up front (was in a hurry) so i go to electronics to check out... and they had this rack right next to the register that had some clerance stuff on it. so i was looking and there was some speaker wire there with the prongs on the ends (don't know what there name is)... anyway, i was like hmm... wonder how this would work (my sub box has a screw type connector for the wires so it looked like it'd fit great). anyway it was only $3.00 so i bought it. Phillips Magnavox oxygen free 10 ga. speaker wire. 15 ft for 3 bucks... anyway, when i got home i decided i'd try out my new purchase. i removed the wire from the amp to sub (12 ga) and replaced it with the new 10 guage oxygen free wire... anyway, it now sounds much clearer, and i am wondering if this will have any effect on my sub or amp... the JL recieves the wire fine (i could go as low as 6 ga i think) and the prong ends work great on the connections on the box... and there is a seemingly much better sound being emitted from my sub (even sounds a little louder)...
why is that bizzare? Thicker wire would cause less impedence. Also I'm assuming oxygen is not a conductor (someone that knows please verify or denounce this) so having no oxygen would also help. Although in all honesty..the diffrence was probably in your mind..I doubt your ears could tell the diff in wire upgrade. But hey..I dont know for sure.

it is bizarre because i KNOW he's not running enough power to need a thicker gauge wire, also because in sub-bass frequencies the ear is NOT very sensitive to distortion and sound changes. Im gonna pull the magical "psychoacoustics" card

i have no clue... it was weird
im gonna find an spl meter to see if it actually got louder
im also gonna use that wire inside the box too, soon as i find my damned connectors

I'm gonna guess psychoacoustics too unless it was out of phase or you had a loose connection....especialy since the wire in the box is still the same...remember, all items are only as strong as the weakest link.
by the way, Oxygen free copper or "OFC" is copper that was basically sealed in it's jacket with very little oxygen surrounding it. Oxygen is what causes the wires to become oxidized (basically rust), since electricity travels along the surface of a wire the lack of oxidation makes it easier for the signal to move through the cable, meaning less impedence, meaning more signal gets through, maning better sound.
yeah, thats like what i did with my home system... i had some mit 50 dollar speaker cables that i sold and replaced with single strand 30 ga copper transformer winding wire, and it sounded better....
