FG vs. urethane

how fragile is FG exactly? is it worth forking out the extra dough to get the urethane?

(i did search but did not find the results i was looking for)

Fiberglass can break easily. Urethane bends and flexes when it gets hit. If you get a lip kit, they are all urethane. If you get anything in urethane, at least get the front bumper.

Yes and no. FG is much much more delicate and prone to breaking.

I wouldn't be too worried about a FG rear lip, but the rest would have to be urethane.

FG comes in different grades. The cheaper you go, the less quality FG you get. If you really want a certain kit, Buddy Club for example, the only material is FG. However, Buddy Club is not the cheapest kit on the market. Its because of the material and layers of FG used to make the kit. Urethane is a much stronger material than FG. You want to look at certain items before you think of getting a kit. Road conditions around area, use of the kit, and price range (install, paint, etc.). You can, if you have the money purchase a complete kit FG or Urethane, have the kit installed, painted, etc. and run around with the stock front bumper and still have the rest of the kit on. You may like the kit front bumper on there, but you may not want to mess it up. The final choice is up to you. Good luck and good hunting.

As long as the painter is familar with the material and paint is preped correctly, the paint will stay on. That happens on all surfaces if paint is not properly mixed, applied, and cured.

it depends entirely on the quality of the kit. also, urethane does hold up better, but even when professionally painted, minor chipping causes a lot of paint damage. you can't repaint parts of a urethane piece easily like you can with fiberglass.

let's say good quality versus a urethane kit...which would be better for daily driving and street parking...?

I know several guys in the car audio competition circuit that drive hundreds of miles to compete in shows with their cars and they have fiberglass kits that look great. They do have a few rock pings in the front in spots but the sides and rear look great. Is it just a matter of getting a good quality piece and a good quality paint job with several layers of clearcoat? If glass sucked so bad they wouldn't be selling so many kits.

ak can only hope to improve
plus fiberglass can give you nasty spider web cracks.....

i've owned fiberglass, urethane, and abs plastic kits...

and i highly recommend urethane (or polyurethane) over fiberglass anyday. You will not regret this decision.

If glass sucked so bad they wouldn't be selling so many kits.
It does suck hard and people are stupid (and cheap).... that's why they sell so many. And so many of them crack.....and people learn the hard way.

The only good thing that i see in fiberglass is weight.... a lot lighter than P.U.

The guys I know are not stupid and certainly not cheap. I'm not saying one is better than the other, I'm just saying that I have seen several very nice cars with glass kits and they look incredible, no cracks, no spider webs, nothing. I'm just wondering if it is a matter of getting a high quality paint job and of course getting a good qual;ity glass piece.

pretty much don't be cheap and in the long run with a PU kit and good paint job and the kit should last as long as the car
