245s + 8.5 inch rim width on a 16 = better skidpad?
i'm just wondering. i have heavily modified my wheel well, and i wanna fit 245/45/16s on my civic to increase the g's of the skidpad for better cornering ability. i got $$$ lots of it since i was paid friday. i'm trying to acheive 1 g or more on the 200 ft skidpad. does this sound ok? i have a 1 inch drop. need your opinions

Well first you need to balance the car. To do well on a skid pad, you've gotta get close to 50/50. Then you need a suspension that can hold on for dear life, then the tires make a difference... but you've also gotta get the tire pressures right. They make a big difference. What tire you choose is also going to make or break it.
You seem to always think the bigger you can go, the better it is... and that isn't always the case. You can pull a G with 205 tires if you have the car set right.

It is probably best to take a step-by-step approach to get to your 1g skidpad goal
STEP 1: How do you measure it? If you already have access to the skidpad & a G-tech or some kind of even better instrumentation,
STEP 2: Go out there and see exactly how many g's you run right now before you make any changes! How do you know if you are improving or not?
Then every time you make a change, go out and see what effect it had.
STEP 3: Sticky tires will make a big difference - a lightweight wheel to reduce unsprung weight would be the next best thing (if you want the best handling other places besides a circle on the skidpad). What brand are your 225/50's and what rims are you using right now?
I'm still not sold on your idea of the 8.5" wide rims & 245 tires...it sounds awfully heavy for handling. Why don't you go for a 16 X 7 wheel that weighs between 12 & 15 pounds. Then, with your fenderwell mods, you could either use the 215/45-16 Falken Azenis Sport (not avail at too many places right now!) or the 225/45-16 Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions. They are the stickiest tires available in those 16 inch widths.
STEP 4: Suspension changes? Like flotsamm & Boilermaker1 have said, there are other mods to do besides tires that will help tremendously. The basics are:
> Upgrade shocks/struts along with lowering springs (full coilovers mmmm
)
> Stiffen the structure of our Civics with strut bars/tie bars
> Reduce body lean with anti-sway bars
Maybe Boilermaker1 and some of the other autoXers can help you (don't forget the Suspension forum too)

i have on Bridgestone Potenza S-02s from tirerack.com, eibach 1 inch drop springs, strut tower bar, a tie bar, anti roll bar from ptuning.com. i already know what a g feels like from riding hard in a 1995 supra when i was in my hs reunion. some guy was nice enough to me to let me drive it and he said it puss more than a g with his suspension mods

What about changing the chamber angles to a more positive setting? More positive means the tire angles outwords not in improving traction during turns. Of course gotta tune accordingly to suspension, and ride height. I'm not sure how this is done, but I think you can get some of that positive chamber angle by dropping with your full coilovers. Fine tuning is ideal cuz too much positive angle will wear your tires faster, and worse increase your braking distance, and slow your acceleration.

i am getting a camber kit on monday, soon enough... i will try the positive camber method... then i might to convert to 5 lug if i cant find 16x8-9 rims in 4x100 lug. i can get some 16x8-9 rims with some fat 245s if i use my former college fund my parents gave back to me for the baby.
Good job on getting the other suspension components upgraded. Got your adjustable Koni "yellows" set on firm yet?
If you won't be persuaded from the 8 or 9 inch wheel thing, you can order the
Volk TE37
or Volk CE28N
in 16" X 8" in the 4 X 100 pattern (in the 16" X 7" width they only weigh 11-12 lbs)
If you want to be totally crazy, The Toyo Proxes RA-1 is a street legal race tire
that comes in the 245/45-16 size. The treadwear rating is only 40!!!!!
The S03 Pole Position still comes in 245/45-16 -- you obviously know how good the Bridgestones are.
Get some help with the offset of the wheels when you are ordering
Good luck! come back and tell us if everything fits. Take pictures!

The easiest way to convert our civic to a 5 lug pattern is to do a brake swap from an RSX. With this swap you put the RSX brakes to replace the discs up front and replace the rear drums with discs. A member here, Hawk, has done this to his car. You can ask him for anymore information or read the thread he started about his engine swap. I believe it says something about it in there.
