What State are you in? and did it happen in your home state? If not, the offense falls under the State you committed the offense in. I was busted for Underage Consumption last year on spring break in the Outer Banks NC.
Your 1st course of action should be to look up your state laws. You can actually search by the statute number on your citation. Read up on the laws and find out if your state offers PBJ or any type of deferred judgement. The most important thing is that you dont end up with a conviction that goes on your record. If you are well dressed, defferential and respectful in court and wholeheartedly admit wrongdoing you can get off. Don't tell the judge anything along the lines of you "dont see it as a big deal" etc. etc.
When you go to court go and approach the prosecutor before the judge calls your case. Ask him if he's willing to do a deferrment and what that would entail for you. There is usually a form he'll give you to fill out for this. That way when the judge calls you and asks what you'll plea you ask for a deferrment and the prosecutor will recommend that to the judge. It all depends on your judge though. I got lucky.
I ended up with 32 hrs community service, $300 fine, $150 court costs and a 500+ mile trip through the night from DE to NC to make it to my 8AM court date.
