Problem with speeding, need advice

Alright guys i got pulled over today for speeding. My 3rd time and 2nd ticker. Im 17 years old i will be 18 in like 2 months. I have been driving for about 2 years and i always drove fast, so now its a habit to go about 65 without even thinking about it. My insurance is already more than my car payment, and now it will go up even more with a point. I have to pay for both the car and the insurance, i make enough money, but if i dont stop getting tickets then ill spend all my money on insurance and not have anything left over. So do any of you have any advice on how to break the habit of speeding???

A couple more questions, when i got pulled over the cop said he would let me off with a warning because he said my exhaust is too loud. I live in california, and he said anytime the muffler is louder than the stock one it is illegal. I have the full magnaflow cat back, and the exhaust is pretty quiet compared to other civics i see driving. Is this true, i thought if the muffler was over a certain decibal it was illegal. The cop also asked me what kind of intake i have, and since im saving for a turbo everything on the engine is stock. The cop made me pop my hood and he checked out all of that stuff. Are all intakes illegal, or certain ones? And if some cop looked at my engine when i install my turbo am i gonna get into any kind of trouble.

I know this is long, but im bored and cant sleep.

There is no trick to not speeding bro...If you have to keep your tickets on your dash to remind you then do it. You cant feel challenged when some other import flies by you...just cruise.

In Cali I think as long as your exhaust is 95db or less you're legal

Not all intakes are illegal...all the established intake companies are making legal products.

As long as your turbo is built well with piping and all you should be ok. Keep your receipts in the car for arguments sake.

Are they allowed to ask you to pop your hood?

Are they allowed to ask you to pop your trunk?

I hear that's unlawful without a warrant.

Especially the trunk part.

Here's the trick...we ask you if we can search your vehicle...if you say yes then we do. If you say no then we have reasonable suspicion to detain you. You were stopped for something and if its a misdemeanor or a felony thats arrestable. If someone is arrested thats probable cause to search the vehicle.

If someone is arrested and the car is towed then the all items in the vehicle will be inventoried...

If the officer has reason to believe that something under your hood may be illegal...intake, stolen parts/engine he will find a way to check.

Its when the driver says no that gets the officer wondering...what do you have to hide?

So therefore there is no way around having your vehicle searched?

Nothing.... it's just that this one super cocky cop came to my car and asked if "I got gas?" I found that both funny and dumb at the same time.

Likewise another cop came to my friends car thinking he had an exhaust just because his intake sounded loud. I found that funny and dumb too. He was sitting behind us in his car writing us up for the longest time and the exhaust (if my friend had one) would have been in plain sight. And yet he still made a fool of himself and was like "yea I'm gonna have to write you up for this exhaust too."

my friend was like "what exhaust"

The cop went back sat in his car for a while and gave my friend a seat belt ticket to save face.

Hey if you're a cop then props to you I mean you seem like a cool guy but I'm just saying dam the ones that I've come into contact with haven't been the brightest of the bunch.

I mean around here it kinda ticks me off that cops are so so pretentious.
And seeing them get burned by their own words is just funny.

I can't wait to see a cop ask to pop my hood and then he'll find nothing but a stock engine under there. haha.

So your friend didn't have an exhaust at all?...if that's what im hearing then that is technically illegal...unless the cop was a dumba** and jus wrote the ticket for another reason.

saying no means you are not giving consent to search the vehicle. that isnt arrestable, but if there are underlying reasons and the officer believes there may contraband etc in the car then they can request a warrant but they can only detain you for a reasonable amount of time.

I believe that a cop is allowed to look under the hood, but not in your trunk. They need a warrant, but can detain you like kyle4583 said.

One small trick that cops can do to search your trunk legally even if you have denied is to pop open the back seats. But they cannot enter the car again unless you give them concent. They are only allowed to take into account what is in plain view. This opening the back seats cannot really be possible with our civics because you need a key, but if its open for instance because you like showing off your subs, then he can stick his/her little sticky fingers in there.

Lol to that. My trunk is tied down with cable, so they're not searching that one.

Whenever I get the urge to speed, I remember my first ticket and all the crap I went through. A full day spent on going to court, paying a fine, and trying to explain something to the cop that pulled me over. Then I went to traffic school to get the points off. And it will be alot worse if I get another ticket. This is all stuff I never want to go through. So now I'm the pimping slow civic going the speed limit when 98% of people are speeding.

well im only 19 going on 20. i just whent to court on the 20th for my 20th ticket. beleive it or not. when i was younger i got lucky, my mom knew somebody i got like 2 tickets dismissed, and about half of the rest of thosre are fixit tickets like altered suspension and tailights no registration even though i just bought the car and my mom and i were both going to get it registered on our way that moment. well this last one was for reckless driving, i was racing this mustang and i got cought. i was over the limitable amount for beging non reckless. so i had to go to court. the judge suspended my liscence for 30 days. if i do anything else wrong within a year trafic wise i go to jail for 10 days. so, in conclusion i am going to take all my speeding to the track every friday night. i suggest you do the same. and when a civic or mustang drives by just turn the subs up and let them roll by maybe youll get lucky and they will be at the track.

its not that i have problems racing people, i got a stock civic, almost everything will beat me, so i dont waste gas. But when im just driving and i dont really pay attention and im just focused on the road ill be going about 60, 65, depending on what feels like is a safe speed to me. I have been getting better and going the speed limit a lot thanks to my cruise control, but every now and then ill find myself speeding

When you're doing 60 or 65 arent you passing other traffic? Thats one clue. Stay in the right lane...thats the traditional slow lane.

i agree, should stay on the right 2 lanes. not the very right one becuz theres a lot of ppl who are going to merge onto ur lane so thats a little risk. every moment, check up on ur speed gauges and see how fast u r going compared to traffic and the speed limit. people will say go with the traffic flow, their are ppl like me who go 80mph on the carpool lane.

safety tip: leave a 3 second gap for the car ahead of you.
