I'm not anti-french..hell I lived in Montreal for 11 years but I saw something this morning that kinda pissed me off..
I saw a couple of OC Transpo bussses with French only advertising on them! WTF is that all about? Could you imagine if they ran english only adds on busses in Quebec?? lol.
Anyway - I think that's BS and I thought I would rant a bit on it.

You live in Gatineau, Quebec...that's to be expected...lol. I wouldn't wander over into Quebec and wonder why there wasn't any english adds.
I live in Ottawa, Onatario.....at the very least, the adds are to be BILLINGUAL but even that pisses me off sometimes.

Look I am French and I work for a Quebec company I dont think it is fair that OC transpo has all french signs because on 2 of my trailers here in the yard they writing is only in English(a mistake by a square head in TO for not making it bilingual) and I cannot roll these trailers on the Quebec side because there is no french on them and I already got a 350$ ticket because of it...

the problem lies with the fact that Quebec is not a bilingual province, it is french first and foremost. If there is to be any english at all it MUST be secondary (ie smaller print)
Ontario on the other hand is a officially bilingual province. I have no problem with that, but then we should really be equally strick with our bilingual enforcement. I'm from northern ontario and there are some communities up there that are completely french. I remember losing my temper at a Tim Hortons employee becasue I couldn't order a friggin coffee. (No signs, wouldn't speak english) Its not like I couldn't sorta figure it out, but if I have to put up with all the mandatory bilingual ****, it should go both ways (sorta like Viper, hehe)

DUde, First of all go anywere in gatineau or hull, any shop, talk to them in english people will be able to understand ya and talk back to you, then go to ottawa, and try to speak french to freaking mcdonals or wallmart I dont care, 80% of the people wont understand a thing and wont bother to try...
Go to frecking alberta, bc, manitoba, anywhere, I dont see any french under the english signs exept in french villages.
Go to toronto even, there nothing is french there...
the only places you'll see french words are in french villages or on Goverment Proprety so dont give me that bull **** that you guys are trying...

The reason Alberta, BC, and Manitoba don't know french/have french sign is because they are nowhere near a french speaking province. They have no need to speak any other language except for english. You go to BC for example, speak french and they will be liek "WTF?" Mind you a big second language in BC is Chinese, Japanese, Korean. (Again this is due to the proximity of Asia)
"DUde, First of all go anywere in gatineau or hull, any shop, talk to them in english people will be able to understand ya and talk back to you"
Well I have first hand experience with this actually. I don't speak alot of french, and this is mainly due to my upbringing of having an english speaking mother. I was in Quebec a few years ago and got lost. I went into a gas bar to ask someone for directions. They looked at me, and refused to help me because I didn't speak french. I know this because thats what they told me. To be honest, in Ontario aprox 80% of the population DOES speak both official languages.
Maybe those places that you went to and spoke french, and the employee(s) didn't "understand a thing and wouldn't bother to try", well maybe they couldn't speak french. Same goes over in Quebec. alot of people can't speak english.
I know working in retail can be a pain, especially when you get some customer come up to you and starts to speak french, I explain to them that I don't speak french, and they get pissed off, and then say in PERFECT english "I'll go somewhere were people speak french"
That is pure iggnorance.
Toronto doesn't NEED french because they are not directly boardering Quebec. This whole french/english thing has to do with PROXIMITY to provinces.
This ain't no bullshit it's the honest truth. I drive in ONTARIO and see all signs in english and french. I goto Quebec and not ONE sign is written in ENGLISH
Explain to me than why signs do not have to be written in english in Quebec, but they need to be in both languages in Ontario. If we had only english signs in Ontario the french would be the FIRST people to raise a fuss about it. Obviously in Quebec english people don't have any rights, becasue if they did, the signs would be in both languages. I rest my case! thank you!

^^^ Isn't New Brunswick the only "official" bilingual province? As far as I know, every province's official language is English with the exception of Quebec which is French.
Winnipeg has a French section to their city. Cross the Red River at Boulevard Provencher and you in a predominantly French speaking area of the city.
I do agree with you guys as to why signs aren't in both languages. If Canada wants to recognize and celebrate the fact we are a bilingual country, the least we could do is accommodate everyone.
And I agree, it is frustrating. I've traveled to Quebec three times. I went there on a short exchange and sometimes I'd forget and speak English and some people would get mad at me. When I apologize in French, they are surprised, but still somewhat offended...

i am not part of ottawa's region, but its only fair to have multilingual advertising in ottawa, some people get pissed off in london that there isn't multilingualism(is that even a word?) for the french that reside here...
my gf is multilinguistic(i like when she talks dirty in french to me) Que est tu papa?...lol
i think being a country with two official languages, that the bordering provinces to quebec should have both translations for everything...but i have no regard for separatists....i know the history, and i have no problem with sharing languages....
but for the separatists, triumph the comic dog said it best,
"...so you two are separatists eh, you hear that sound"
"no"
"well thats the sound of no one giving a $hit"
i am sorry if i offended anyone, but seriously the bloc quebecois can shove it

I dont know about Ontario's official status, but Ottawa is Offially bilingual, meaning City job's and whatnot are all bilingual.
I think we as Canadians are going about the bilingual thing all wrong. Do something right or don't do it at all, not half-a55ed like it is right now. Every province/municipality should not be allowed to determine their own language laws. Make it official, everywhere. Teach both languages equally all across the country. Or say f-it and completely drop the official bilingualism.
