***, i hate to post yet another gay lead...
but...
i may have found a version 5 STi front clip in pittsburg. $5000 shipped to canada, which would workout to $6002.49 CAD.
I'd need some random parts (gas tank, fuel pump, rear diff, rear crossmember), but other than those, the swap would be dead easy. I'm now leaning towards this. just thought I'd throw another gay update out there.
because, as you all know, i like putting things in my bum.

The new route...
Well, the lead from pittsburg dried up.
I've decided to go where no man has gone before. Well, where no american has gone before at least.
I'm going to import a wreck from japan. The law of vehicle importation says that you can't import a vehicle newer than 15 years old...if you want it to be licensed. I found a by-law stating that so long as you acquire a permit from the exporting countries government, stating that the car is a wreck, for parts only, and NOT rebuildable, you can import the car for parts.
So, rather than hum n haw at engines, and then build a list of parts that I'll need to actually complete my swap...I'm just going to import a wreck from japan and be done with it. I will have 110% of the needed parts, and will even be able to upgrade parts in my car. I'm more than likely going to convert to a right-hand-drive if I do this, so that I can use the STi steering rack. The STi steering rack has a MUCH shorter turning radius, being only 2.5 turns lock to lock. This is pimp. I'll also steal the interior (well, just the seats..I refuse to have an interior in my car other than the dash and seats, and maybe floor mats), the pedals, steering wheel, etc.
So, this will increase the price of the project a significantly. Instead of looking at around $5000 for the engine/tranny, then maybe $3000 for random parts (including gimp wheels)...I'm looking at $12000 when all is said and done.
The only problem is the importing games. I've found a crap load of documents on the transport canada website, the ministry of transportation of ontario website, the candian customs board website, etc...
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cm/...d9-1-11-e.html
I basically have to target a loophole in that doc above, or get an importer to work with me. I'm thinking of asking www.fourstarmotorsports.com to help me out, as they do this all the time. It's hairy business, but I'm not going to just throw away the money before doing all the research...no worries there.
And we all know how hard I work when I'm at work, so rest assured I'll have plenty of research done before making any rash decisions
so...this appears to be the route: import a wreck, and transplant everything into my shell. There's a reason why I made sure the shell was in great shape: because all I'm going to use from it is the frame and shell...everything else is getting tossed

oh yeah, forgot about that. I honestly had tendonitis in both my wrists from playing too much foosball. man that sucked. Luckily, with all this time off of work since july, I haven't played much. So, my wrists recovered, and I'm ready to kick anyone's ***** at foosball
Back on track to the car deal: Loopholes in government documents ROCK. It's all about finding loopholes and stickin it to the man.

***, no matter how many loopholes i find, it won't make a difference.
I just found out that as of January 1st, 2005, the government of japan passed a law stating that no cars can be exported out of japan unless they are shipped in pieces, not to be rebuilt as a car. Apparently they wanna keep the good stuff to themselves...punks.
So, I'm going to have to rent a container, pay someone to strip the car for me, then pray they don't steal too much. great.
...the plot thickens yet again.

I'll tell ya what. Cause your such a good guy and I love ya so much I would be willing to do you a favour. How about this...you pay for me to go to Japan (all expenses paid of course) and I'll make sure everything you bought makes it in the container

One step ahead of ya:
$2024 for a round trip flight in march. man, that's a LOT of cashola!
how do these people sleep at night?!
then i'd have to pay for a hotel...food, etc. fek.
hrm. finding a wreck locally (04+ STi) is looking more and more like a better option. fek....i didn't wanna go that route.
THIS is the route i wanted to go: http://www.japaneseusedcars.com/auct...ionNo=TUT43542

Jim, You must be goinf insame, trying to figure out what the hell it is you wanna do to get this engine!!!
I say smuggle yourself to Japan on a boat, bring your Visa, pay for the boat ride with sexual favours, no one will ever find out, b/c they will all be Japanese
Once you get to Japan, go find your contact, (this will already be taken car of from your info digging here in Canada) watch him take every piece off the car, and put it carefully in the crate you rent. Sleep on ground, get smuggled back to Canada in Crate
There you go. Problem solved

Abe: It's cheaper to get a whole car. It's also WAY easier...the wiring is the biggest biotch. No joke, swapping the engine in/out only takes a day. It's the wiring that's gonna take weeks and weeks. So, if I score an entire car, i don't have to worry about that...i can just transplant everything into mine. no worries.
a front clip won't come with a gas tank...it won't come with the rear differential or rear crossmember...or the rear brakes, suspension, etc. I need a LOT of stuff. I can get a drivetrain without suspension for $13,000 (V8 STi USDM), but it doesn't come with a radiator, ECU, wiring, or anything else that i'd need.
grrrr...tough road, man. i might end up having to score an entire USDM WRX, swap everything in, then upgrade to an STi later. that would suck though
WRX's ain't got nothin on the STi...especially for internals. fek!

Jim just go get a wrx engine like ted and build it to take big boost, jdm would be nice and all but do you really want your car to be down for 2 months waiting for a distrubitor if it goes? It's all about speed, not jdm :P usdm for life yo.

but for the amount of money it'll take to get a usdm up to the specs of a jdm, I'd be better off getting the JDM.
it's got a reinforced block, semi-closed deck, etc. not the kind of thing you can just 'buy'...you gotta get the jdm deal.
you can substitute the usual parts for usdm ones (rad, starter, etc...) no worries about waiting months for parts.
i'm just waiting to find the right thing, instead of buying a bunch of random parts. buying an entire clip is the way to go...I just gotta find one.
