Unhappy Steering Wheel mods

A factor leather wrapped steering wheel is one of the 'missing' features in my Civic.. one of those little things that would have been nice to get.

However, checking with the dealership (not a very helpful one) they won't touch any type of change to your steering wheel. I called Honda.ca too and talked to someone there, who basically said that of course it is possible to change the steering wheel since lots of people do it -- but Honda can't recommend any type of swap at all, since the cars are built and delivered with steering wheels / air bags and no other combination is tested for safety.

If you had the misfortune to 'break' your existing wheel for example, they'd only replace it with exactly the same type of wheel.

So.. question is, anyone done a steering wheel swap? What's the consensus feeling on this? Safety isn't one of those things you should mess with..

Maybe I should just got a 'wrap' for my wheel and shut up.

I've swapped a couple of steering wheels now. In fact, I was selling my stock leather-wrapped EL steering wheel a while ago, but it has since been bought and I installed it elsewhere.

The swap itself is dead easy, as long as you remember to make sure the wheel is prefectly straight when you turn off the car, and disconnect the battery for 30 minutes to prevent the airbag going off. I hear it's only like 3 minutes to lose charge, but better safe than sorry.

Ya, I love the SiR wheel. Perfect size, great grip and you get a functioning air bag out of it as well.

I think you should buy it and put it in my car :P my 14 year old steering wheel falls apart in my hand. I couldn't justify spending 300+ on a steering wheel when for 300$ i could buy a rim or something. Just a thought.

I'm a bit of a safety freak -- so I think I'll see if getting the wrap is going to satisfy me. The SIR steering wheel looks killer -- I assume this was a DIY thing?

Worst case, I pitched away $40 on a wrap..

ya...it's not that hard at all. The only draw back is that you have to re-route the wiring for your OEM cruise control switches. The one's that come on the SiR wheel will not work even though they seem to have matching connectors. I haven't gotten around to doing mine yet because I hardly ever use cruise to begin with.
And like I said, having an air bag is nice too.

That would assume I had cruise control.. I bought the 'special edition' (ie: a DX with A/C)

Nice pic's above with the Si steering wheel. But who would bother in an automatic? I guess it takes all sorts to make the world go around.

If I go the wheelskins route (seems like ~$40 CDN on eBay) what color is the best match for the Honda steering wheel?

My RSX one had different connectors too but thankfully the guy I bought my wheel from provided me with the RSX plug too. I just spliced into my OEM one and was able to use the RSX wheel's cruise controls. Huzzah huzzah!
