Accumulated turbo parts...
hey d00dz
just thought I'd share in my excitement. (ie: this is what I've been upto lately)
as some of you d00dz know, i'm building my own custom turbo setup. I thought I'd say what I've got so far (not much) and what I have left to buy (a lot).
Have:
1) Mitsubishi TD04 turbo (02 WRX stock turbo)
2) Up-pipe/down-pipe from a WRX (I'll use the flanges for easier mounting of the turbo)
3) Log style manifold (the header jobby)
4) Spearco 23X6X3 intercooler
Needs:
1) HKS S-AFR (super air fuel regulator)
2) Blitz DTT (dual turbo timer) - doubles as a boost gauge
3) 440cc (roughly) injectors
4) intake filter
5) aluminum piping for intake side (and rubber connectors, etc)
6) oil and coolant hoses for turbo
7) hks super sequential blow off valve (SSBOV)
8) (possibly) fuel pump + convert to return fuel system
9) gauges (boost is covered off with the DTT): batt, oil pressure, etc. the boost and air/fuel are covered off by items 1 and 2.
what am I missing?
so...I hope that by the end of the summer, I'll have all the parts setup and ready to go. fabricating the turbo to the manifold, and then to the downpipe will probably be the hardest parts. after that, the fuel, then the tuning.
the installation will hopefully be decent. I'm not worried about installing the intercooler or the intake piping...that should be relatively straightforward.
anywho, I hope to be smoking some serious *** in autocross by the end of the season

AHHHHHH!!!!! SICKNESS!!! congrats yo and hopefully everything works out!!!
Looks like you have most of the parts there from what i can remember is needed!!! SWeet job and keep up updated!!!

i cant remeber if i told you about this before
www.homemadeturbo.com
no specific info for your engine, but a lot of really cool "junkyard" turbo's

Damn, this stuff is too complexe for me, all i know is u need the turbo, some pipes, and intercooler and BOV.
Are u sure that the down and up pipes will fit in your engine bay? will they bend in the direction u want them to? and if not how will u fadricate the pipes? this needs some serious work

hehehe that's why it's a hobby!the only thing I can't do myself is the welding of the exhaust pipes. but, I'll get them all aligned up, and then take them to some place to get welded. I have access to an arc welder, but it would be hella slow to arc weld exhaust stuff

anyone got a mig/tig welder?
LilJoe: yeah, you sent me that link a while back..it kicks ***
thanks! I'll look through it again for some more ideas. <--That really is ME

The manifold that I already have looks identical to that one. The only difference is that there is no plate mounted to the manifold yet...it's basically a generic manifold for the K series engines.
but, it came with a mounting plate and a mounting plate adapter. So, I just have to weld on the mounting plate and get the flange from my turbo.
the kewl thing about the manifold that I got is that it's totally generic, so you can mount any turbo to it
mine being the mitsubishi turbo, doesn't have a whole lot of choices, so custom is pretty much the easiest way to go.
but man, that website kicks ***! they have some pretty decent prices!

oh yeah, the intercooler came in on friday...HOLY ****! it's gorgeous!!!
can't wait to get the rest of the parts!

yup! you could build the exact same setup, actually.
i've been doing it cheaply and efficiently
I should have all the parts collected by the end of the summer. I'm taking it slow as I just bought a house, and can't afford much at all
but, once I get all the parts, I'll post my setup and hopefully some dyno numbers.
mmm....turbo.

projected cost: cheap.
hehehe
not sure. I'll have to price out some more stuff before I spit out a number.
but, it will be a helluva lot cheaper than the "kits" that are available, and it will be custom suited to my needs.

hehehe amen
next on the purchase list is the HKS S-AFR. It will be the fuel management system.
then i have to score some guages (air/fuel is hte one I really need the soonest), and I'll be ready to start mapping out the stock fuel curve, so that when I boost, I can remap it as close to stock as possible before dyno tuning it.
mmm...dyno.

quite a few, actually.
ephatch.com is fairly useful because they don't have a lot of 15 year olds trying to stir **** up.
I've also done a lot of research on different websites that sell the parts and make the parts.
I've used the greddy kit as the template for mine, and then stole ideas from all the other kits (SFP, Cybernation, etc).
Basically, you have to start by knowing what you want the turbo to do for you. I want to have a fast-spooling turbo that doesn't spit out huge horsepower numbers, but instead just gives me a nice smooth torque curve from launch.
if you prefer drag, then you'd want a bit bigger turbo than the one I have (the TD04 from a WRX).
with that in mind, I got the turbo, and started piecing together the rest of the puzzle based off of company setups, and also random websites.
this way I'll have the setup that matches my needs, will be nice and safe, and won't cost me too much money. it's all about 'custom' baby

i'm not into making record times at drags.. but i dont want something that can speed up from start..
lokoing at 200whp.. and if i can closely match that with the torque that would be great too... this is my daily car and want it to last a long time..

same here...I don't wanna blow the engine anytime soon!
that's why I'm staying in the safe range. by fast spool-up I mean a turbo that is small enough to spool quickly, but the smaller the turbo, the less horsepower.
so, I'll be aiming for 6.5psi for daily use, and then for autocross I'll bump it up to 8psi.
this is intercooled, too. similar setups yield about 220whp. (on average)
if i wanted to keep adding, I could get the horsepower up high, but again, thats not what i'm looking for. i just want extra power down low (2000-4500rpms), so I want a fast spooling turbo that can deliver its boost rather quickly.
mmm...spooling....

fast spooling is definately nice...especially for autocross since u prolly dont get past like 4000-5000 rpms. Well maybe but im just taking a guess!! Still gonna be really sweet. Are all ur suspension parts transferrable, cuz with all that power ur gonna need to keep **** under control!!!! good job tho!

sweet, I just got my manual boost controller. It cost me $23.78 from home depot
I found a DIY for a boost controller...the theory is the same as other name brand controllers, except this one you just build yourself.
getting closer and closer as time rolls by...
injectors are next! they should arrive sometime next week!
