Is it a regular block heater or a circulatory one?
reason I ask is that I was told the circulatory heaters have been known to overheat and burn out if you leave them plugged in while your car is running...

Any place can do an install without destroying a key. The other method is more problematic.
I got my Compustar installed without destroying a key and it has worked great.
If the shop you are taking it to is experienced in installs, they will ask you if want to sacrifice a key or use the alternate method.
