Should I Change my Trans

Ok if this was your car (2001 Honda Civic Lx with 150,000 miles on it and no more car payments) and the transmission was starting to slip would you get the transmission replaced for around $1500.00 or start thinking about getting a new car.

Some people say get the tranny fixed and the car will last a while, and some are saying once the transmission goes you shouldnt bother because things start going with it.

I figured I'd ask the experts!!

Re: Should I Change my Trans

Depends, do you want to keep the car for a long time?
Will you be needing a bigger car/another car in the near future?

Our cars go for around $3000-$5500 depending on where you live and the condition of the car. So that should help you decide. Personally, this is just me personally. I would sell the car and put my money on a manual Civic. Our generation Civics are notorious for faulty auto transmissions.

Re: Should I Change my Trans

I was thinking if she can last 3 years with a trans swap, and I dont need a bigger or smaller car. Thanks for the reply!! I guess my real question is How successful are trans swaps for my car in making them last 3 or more years, if there is a good turn out then i would take this route, if the cars end up having multiple problems after a tranny swap then I probably would take new car route.
Just trying to get a consensus of people who have changed the transmissions in their 7th gen civics and how long they lasted and what was the maintenance like?

I'd drive it until you can't tolerate the behavior anymore. It might last a long time before it goes out, and so then you'll have the decision of replacing the transmission or not. But then at that point you wouldn't have reliable transportation

Re: Should I Change my Trans

please tell me you've changed the atf by now. it should be done every 2 years. if it loses the ability to lubricate your gears that's just going to make the trans. fail sooner. mine's had a steady slip in first for about 4 years since i've owned it, with regular fluid checks and changes it hasn't failed yet and is the original, now 11 year old auto transmission, which is notorious for failure. i think it's just people who don't understand proper maintenance. honda atf is different from the usual domestic fluid and doesn't discolor as fast or start to smell like most used transmission fluid, so change it if it's at the service point!

Re: My tranny is blown

I have an 04 Civic Ex Coupe D17A2 and today I was going around 45 in 4th gear. when i accelerate and my engine just revs up to around 5400rpm and does not kick in the transmission I pull into the nearest parking lot and park. I try every gear inc/ reverse and get no acceleration. The car just revs and idles normally. I then put the car in park and turn the car off and open the car door close the door and turn the car on. The car would run for a few seconds and not have any problem. I get around 10 mph and the problem happens again repeatedly. When i turn the engine on the car makes a constant whining sound. I need multiple opinions before i do anything.

What is your opinion on this problem?
