I'm definitely not an expert and I've never dealt with any engine mods, but I believe it's just a v-tec head and a modified ECU. Anyone care to elabortae?

depends.. are you in Canada or USA?
In Canada, the Si has a D17A2 1.7L SOHC VTEC engine
In the US, the Si has the K20A3 2.0L DOHC i-VTEC engine

Re: 2004 dx to 2004 civic vtec engine
then you have the D17 engine.
heres a word of advise, we dont have the kinda of vtec that is in the fast and the furious (thats ivtec). our vtec is technically an e-vtec and is for economical reasons.
and its not worth swapping. because there are a LOT more things you have to do to you car... like the ABS system/sensors/knuckles, exhaust, 02 sensors, headers, wiring harness, ECU... those are just a FEW things you have to change out or else your civic will be throwing engine error codes like theres no tomorrow.
its not worth it for a few extra ponies. you are better off spending that kind of money on a stage 1 cam and a good tune.

James. He's asking about a k20 swap
Back on topic. It's a little more intensive. Most people go for k-pro for engine management: pretty much a chipped k-series ECU (~$1100). You also need motor mounts which can run ~$600. Then there's fitment, rsx sub frame, and the motor itself, which can average $4-6000. You also have to make sure you get the engine and transmission. A k swap can easily run you upwards of 8 grand, depends on how patient you are while shopping for parts
