Rep Power: 0 Swap or build and boost?
Ok, so my D17A2 VTEC is having a little engine knocking and grinding...
Should I swap it for a k20a2 or work on my D17A2 by lowering the compression with better pistons, get some turbo cams, and replace the valves and springs with aftermarket ones and then boost her?
I will have roughly 10,000k for my entire car... that has to include engine work, turbo, wheels, tires, suspension, interior, etc. so cant blow it all in one place.
id like to spend no more than about 6k-7k on the motor swap MAXIMUM... unless the K20A-R is that ****ing sweet of a deal... lol
i have found K20A2s for about 2,200 and the place I go to will swap it and the tranny and stuff for $800 flat guaranteed... BUT i can also build the engine and buy a nice turbo kit (DEZOD FTW) for about the same price...
I am looking for some good reliability, so N/A looks tempting, but I also like the sound of that "whapoosh" of a sexy *** turbo.

anything else u guys know of?
all help is greatly appreciated.

Turbo is sweet, but I'd go for the swap! and this price isn't too bad, compared to you wanting to spend no more than 6-7k for the K20a (type R) motor.

K20A ( Type R) Motor, Tranny, ECU
Price: $ 5499.00 Plus shipping and handling.
Good luck!!!

Well you gotta also look at your goals just besides reliablity... everyone wants that! so depending on your goals, you will get different answers even tho i think most people will say swap especially if you have the money. You seem to be really wanting the k20a motor so if its what you really want i say go for it.. you can always save more money for the other parts of your project. just my opinion....

if you've got the cash swap it for sure. a turbo is freakin fun, and it is reliable if you have a good tune and take care of it, but a swap is just a better platform. my two cents says to do a frank though. the k20a isnt that great over the a2, especially for the price, and no matter what you do you can't beat displacement with the k24 bottom end.

ya, im looking at the k20a2 alot more now.
its way cheaper but its lower compression ratio leaves me room to boost later if i want.
I think ill get a K20A2 and build it a bit before i drop it in... now i just need a GOOD place to get it all from... lol
im liking that JDM depot site, but there could be others.
god im so excited. seriously.
i just cant wait to start cutting out this limp *** D and bolt in that ****ing beast and work on her!
btw, u think the K20A2 will need premium gas or what? i mean, the compression isnt that high, so it SHOULD be able to run on regular, or am I wrong?

ok, i think im just gonna build it and boost it.
I cant find any good k20a2's anywhere on the net and no place locally has any either...
what would I need to do to my D17A2 to make it run well with about 8-10PSI daily? im thinking pistons to lower the compression, new valves and retainers and whatnot, and maybe a good cam? maybe even rods and stuff...
I will be getting a DEZOD kit with the 550 cc injectors. I will need to get a new fuel pump as well.
Ok, so, any help in making a list of stuff to buy to make her run really well? ive searched, and found some stuff, but I wanna see if my list matches up with people who have already done it.
