BOV Sound
Just a conversation starter as well as something I always wondered about... Which BOVs flutter and which don't? I have a GReddy Type S (the purple one) and it flutters. I tried adjusting the soft/hard thing and it fell out... forcing me to plug the hole. I will be in the market to replace my busted Type S and want one that flutters so I'm curious.
What do some other ones do? A buddy of mine had a 420whp STi with an HKS SSQBOV that did NOT flutter. Let's "hear" what yours do!

Re: BOV Sound
If I feather off the throttle I can get my Tial to flutter, but other than that it's kind of "TickaCHAW!" at around at 6psi and has a higher pitched "Phreeachkkkt!" at 9psi and above. Normal everyday boost driving and it doesn't flutter at all.

Re: BOV Sound
Even when I was under 9psi of boost the GReddy Type S still flutters, just louder and fewer. The first two are really loud then it tapered off quickly.

Re: BOV Sound
I don't think the greddy type s is supposed to flutter? Listen to them on youtube it has a high pitch whistle sound; not to be confused with the greddy type rs.

Re: BOV Sound
I'm sure Ben desperately wants to be able to answer that question with a firm, "No."
If your BOV is toast and not releasing pressure, that will back up down the compressor and get "chopped" creating a flutter sound.

Re: BOV Sound
Omg the type s is pretty nice .. i have the tial bov tat came with the dezod kit and why do i feel thats its so quiet? im only boosting 5lbs, but it seems like its so quiet, i hear it, only when the music is off, like in the videos.. its so LOUD.. like under WOT, the engine is so loud its really hard to hear the bov.. do u tial guys also feel this way too ... is it because im only 5lbs and not more.

Re: BOV Sound
fluttering isnt cool in my book. compressor surge FTL. i run the ssqv and it only flutters if i feather off the throttle REALLY slowly. It used to flutter alot when i was running a really thin vacuum line to it. once I got the right size, at low boost will sound like the noise a soda bottle makes when first open it, and at moderate boost lets out a really quick high pitched burst, then finally at high boost + high rpm's it does like a combination of the two. sounds pretty mean when you really get on it.

Re: BOV Sound
Don't change the BOV, just up the boost! We're running the same BOV. If you do want to change it, you're probably have to change out the flange, although the HKS may take the same flange. Looking at the HKS site, they have a 50mm flange which looks like the Tial 50mm flange, but I don't know if they work with each other. They also have a 60mm and a 65mm flange, so I'll default to Edwin or someone else who runs an SSQV for sure though.

Re: BOV Sound
OK... well... my Type S has always fluttered. As I said it flutters a lot at low pressure (like 1-5 psi) like letting off part throttle or shifting before it totally spooled and only like two flutters when i was under 9 psi of boost. It was like that when I bought it (used) and it's still like that now. It also whistles after it blows off, making me think it's not doing its job very well.
So you guys think I have compressor surge and thats what makes the flutter? So the air is like bouncing back from my turbo to the BOV?
I have a 3/16 vacuum line going to it... That should be big enough, right?
WHY IS IT ALWAYS A PROBLEM!!!! AHHH!!!!!
Sorry... I'm having a T.E.A.R.S. moment. Any way - so everyone only has the TiAL or the Type S so far?

Re: BOV Sound
That should be fine for the vac line, I run 6mm line to mine (1.25mm bigger than yours). Edwin has the HKS SSQV.
It does not flutter on an idle rev, correct?

Re: BOV Sound
hey speedfoos do u have a boost controller? don't i have to get one to turn up the boost? I have a complete stock everything, i wanted to run safely and boost all the time without any worries .. what would u recommend me turning it up to ?? would it still be safe?? i made 181 to the wheels with 5.5 lbs ... and wouldn't any higher be more towards the less reliable side?? lemme know .. i want to drive and blow off louddd .. i thought if i switched to hks, i love the whistle sound, it would make a difference, but lemme know .. and also how many lbs is the spring in our bovs

Re: BOV Sound
I thought that was an understood... Of course it's when I let off! God DAMN... if it was fluttering while under pressure there's a problem! LOL

Re: BOV Sound
LOL, sorry Ben! OK, so then your BOV sounds like it's doing it's job and nothing is wrong with it then. The fluttering might just be what it sounds like. I know there's a big rubber o-ring around the valve of my Tial. Might be worth taking your Greddy apart, cleaning it, and lubing up the seals with a little silicone grease. Couldn't hurt anyway.
emjay, disclaimer first. ***I am not responsible if you turn up the boost on your car and it breaks.*** OK, now that that is out of the way, what injectors are you running? Before you turn up the boost, you need to be sure you can get the engine enough fuel. If you've got the RSX-S, then you're stuck at 5.5 until you upgrade them. If you've got bigger injectors, 9 psi should be safe - as long as your tuner allowed for it in the map, which he should have to allow for "safe" boost spikes.
I've changed my spring and am running the 7.2 psi spring with a manual boost controller dialed into 9 psi. The dezod kit usually ships with the 5.5 psi spring.

Re: BOV Sound
lol foos .. ur so funny, obviously i know cranking the boost is unreliable and things could break, why would i blame you lol... I have the srt-4 injectors with the FIC ... 9 lbs is safe with a stock end? why did u change the psi spring .. why not just dial it up to 9 with the 5.5 psi spring? is that not possible? -- wouldn't 9lbs put me over 200 whp and that would be considered unreliable with a stock setup??

Re: BOV Sound
Just don't put ***** in the title Ben. Get's the locals all riled up. Sides, I don't need a new spring now that I figured out my boost controller.
As far as why I rocked the different springs, meh. I have no idea any more. I'm sure I had a good reason at the time, but for the life of me I can't remember. Yes, it is possible to just up the boost to whatever you want (within reason) using a boost controller using the 5.5psi spring.
I've had this discussion with Paul about the difference in stress between pressure and HP on the engine. From what I understood, it's the pressure that is the main killer, with HP taking a secondary role. Getting a higher HP at a lower PSI is easier on the engine so I imagine it's safe. I've been running at 9 psi now for about, what, 4 months now? I'm not easy on the car by any means and things haven't fatally broken yet.
